"Gyrosmilia forms fairly small, rounded heads that may be attached by a narrow peduncle. Little is known of the appearance of the living coral. Corallites are joined in longitudinal series, and the valleys are long and sinuous. The shared walls are fused laterally, but there is a narrow, shallow groove along the top of the wall. The distance from mid-ridge to mid-ridge is about 6 to 10 mm, and the depth of the valley is about 8 mm. Septa are prominent and leafy, with smooth edges. There are about ten per cm. Gyrosmilia occurs in shallow and deep fore reef areas but does not form large colonies." (Dr. Elizabeth M. Wood, 1984).
