A tree, commonly 6 or 8 m. high, occasionally larger; twigs gray, more or less clothed with short appressed hairs when young, glabrous in age; leaves odd-pinnate, mostly towards the ends of the branches, 8-23 cm. long; leaflets 5-9, lanceolate to oblong-ovate or ovate, 4-8 cm. ong, 2-3.5 cm. broad, occasionally longer and broader, acuminate at the apex, with the tip obtuse, nearly equilateral or inequilateral and acute or rounded at the base, petioluled, glabrous on both surfaces; inflorescence sub terminal, corymbose-paniculate, shorter than the leaves, the branches puberulent or glabrous; peduncles compressed; flowers pedicelled, the pedicels jointed below the middle; calyx gamosepalous, 4or 5-lobed, the lobes triangular or triangular-ovate, acute, clothed on the outside with short, mostly appressed hairs; petals 4 or 5, oblong or oblongobovate, 7-8 mm. long, 2.2-3 mm. broad, acute, fleshy, densely clothed with very short appressed hairs; staminal tube lobed, the lobes oblong, villous above within and on the back; ovary ovoid or globose-ovoid, hirsutulous, immersed in the disk, the disk hirsutulous; style rather slender, hirsutulous; capsule globose or globose-ovoid, 1.3-1.6 cm. long, 1.2-1.7 cm. broad, the valves ovate, 1.2-1.5 cm. broad, acute, velutinous on the back; seeds more or less hemispheric, black or brownish-black, 7-8 mm. broad; aril scarlet.

A tree, the young twigs strigillose-hirsute; leaves odd-pinnate, mostly towards the ends of the branches, 11-17 cm. long; petioles and rachis strigillose-hirsute, the rachis somewhat grooved above; leaflets 9 or 11, ovate, 2.5-4.5 cm. long, 1.7-2.2 cm. broad, acuminate at the apex, inequilaterally rounded at the base, opposite or sometimes alternate, glabrous above, the midvein and lateral veins impressed, hirsute beneath with rather short, scattered hairs, the midvein and lateral veins prominent; petiolules 2-3 mm. long; inflorescence subterminal, corymbose-paniculate, 5.5-7.5 cm. high, the branches somewhat angled, puberulent; calyx densely strigulose-hirsute, the lobes triangular-ovate, acute or obtuse; petals elliptic to ellipticovate, occasionally somewhat obovate, 4.5-5 mm. long, 1.5-2 mm. broad, acute or obtuse at the apex, densely puberulent on the outside; filaments united to about the middle or a little below, hirsute on the back, villous within near the apex; anthers ovoid, glabrous; disk saucershaped, fleshy, hirsute; ovary conic, hirsute, immersed in the disk ; style hirsute; stigma ovoid, glabrous.
