They are native to The Contiguous United States, Alaska, Canada, United States, and Western North America. They have simple, broad leaves, purple flowers, and drupes. Flowers are visited by Nomada flava, Hylaeus confusus, Black Tail Bumble Bee, and Evodinus monticola vancouveri. Individuals can grow to 12 feet.
