Male of the species, females are all black. Feeding on passiflora blossoms. Not ID'd as Xylocopa mexicanorum as the legs in particular are very hairy. Californians call them by their common name: Teddy Bear Bees.
Posting this for a friend. This was in her backyard and she has never gotten a positive id. Recently showed it to a doctoral student studying bumblebees who said in carpenter bee family. Told her I would post here just in case.
