Lupinus milo-bakeriMilo Baker's lupine. The species, a California endemic, is Included in the CNPS Inventory of Rare and Endangered Plants on list 1B.1 (rare, threatened, or endangered in CA and elsewhere). It also has a State Rank of S1 (critically imperilled.) Most remaining locations are roadside ditches; thus, L. milo-bakeri is threatened by road maintenance and herbicide spraying. Milo Baker, for whom the plant is named, was a 20th-century botanist who worked in northern California, see
milobaker.cnps.org/index.php/about for a short biography. On the down side, L. milo-bakeri is listed, along with other Lupinus species, as possessing major toxicity. Photographed at Regional Parks Botanic Garden located in Tilden Regional Park near Berkeley, California.
