A shrub with much branched, whitish stems, glabrous except at the cottony nodes. Old branches are spinescent with longitudinally cracked bark. Leaves form dense clusters, oblong to narrowly triangular and recurved, clasping and slightly decurrent at the base. Flowers solitary or 2–3 in axillary clusters. Fruiting perianth is thickened, indurate and with dorsal horns.
