Acipencer sturio

The sturgeon has a distinctively long wedge-shaped snout. It has four barbels under the snout used to search in muddy bottoms for all sorts of animals to eat. Instead of no scales, it has bony plates covering its body. In the spring, sturgeons migrate to the rivers to spawn. Their population is declining fast. That is why the sturgeon is now a protected animal species.

Steuren hebben een opvallend lange snuit. Onder die snuit zit een soort uitklapbare slurf. Daarmee graven ze allerlei diertjes uit de bodem om op te eten. Verder hebben ze geen schubben, maar kraakbeenachtige platen op hun lijf. Ze trekken in het voorjaar de rivieren op om zich voort te planten. Het gaat heel slecht met de steuren. Het is daarom een beschermde diersoort.
