A shrub or small tree with the petioles and under surface of the leaflets usually clothed with a dense, persistent tornentum ; leaflets elliptic to nearly oval or sometimes obovate, 2.5-8 cm. long, 1-5 cm. broad, obtuse, acute, or short-acuminate at the apex, inequilaterally cuneate or rounded at the base, the terminal one lanceolate to broadly ovate or obovate; staininate flowers 0.7-1.2 cm. broad, the petals oblong to elliptic or somewhat obovate, 4-5 mm. long, 2-3 mm. broad, the filaments hirsutulous to the middle or a little above; samaras 1.3-2.4 cm. long, broadly elliptic to oval, cordate or truncate at the base, notched or subulate-tipped by the prolongation of the wing along the style ; the body elliptic to oval or somewhat obovate, more or less strongly reticulate.
Type locality : Louisiana.
Distribution : North Carolina to Georgia, Arizona, and Durango.
