This grasshopper is named for the reddish-orange band on its hind wings. This orange band is prominently displayed when the grasshopper is disturbed on the ground and flies away. Posterior to the orange patch is a black band. Another distinguishing feature is that the medial (inside) side of the hindleg femur is bright blue. The body of the grasshopper is mostly gray and brown, with dark patches on the forewings that cover the hindwings at rest. This is a relatively large grasshopper, with males being 36-42 mm in length, while females are 45-5 mm.
