Philadelphus oreganus Nutt. ; T. & G. Fl. N. Am. 1 : 595, as synonym. 1840. Philadelphus confusus Piper, Bull. Torrey Club 29 : 225, in part. 1902.
A deciduous shrub, 2-3 m. high, with ascending or spreading branches ; bark of the young twigs reddish or yellowish, glabrous or slightly hairy, of the previous season's growth and older stems gray, rarely with cross-cracks, but not exfoliating ; buds enclosed in the bases of the petioles ; petioles 5-10 mm. long ; leaf-blades lanceolate to ovate, acute, or on vigorous shoots rounded at the base, more or less acuminate at the apex, denticulate with a few teeth or entire, or on vigorous young shoots dentate, more or less hairy on both sides, the hairs often with pustulate bases, 3-ribbed or more rarely 5-ribbed, the stronger pair of laterals always arising some distance from the base of the blade ; flowering branches 5-15 cm, long, with 2 or 3 pairs of leaves and 3-9 racemose, inodorous flowers ; hypanthium glabrous; sepals lance-ovate, more or less acuminate, 6-8 mm. long, glabrous or with scattered hairs without, tomentose within ; petals elliptic or oval, rounded at the apex, white, 15-20 mm. long ; styles united half their length or nearly to the apex ; stigmas clavate ; capsule elongated-obovoid , about 12 mm. long, somewhat 4-angled below and tapering gradually into the petioles.
Type locality: Cultivated, from British Columbia?
Distribution : On river banks and hills and in copses from Idaho and British Columbia to Oregon and northern California.

A deciduous shrub, 2-3 m. high, with ascending branches; bark of the young twigs reddish, glabrous, of the previous season's growth red or chestnut, exfoliating, and that of the old stems gray ; buds scarcely enclosed in the bases of the petioles ; petioles about 1 cm. long, grooved above ; leaf-blades ovate or lance-ovate, acute at both ends, entire or minutely denticulate, 3-8 cm. long, glabrous or nearly so, 3-5-ribbed, the ribs originating at the bases of the leaf-blades; flowering branches 1-2 dm. long, with 2^ pairs of leaves and a panicle of 7-20 inodorous flowers ; hypanthium glabrous ; sepals ovate, acuminate, glabrous without, tomentose on the margin within, about 5 mm. long; petals white, oval or obovate, rounded at the apex, about 1 cm. long ; stamens numerous ; styles united to the apex ; stigmas short-clavate, almost as thick as the anthers ; capsule short-obovoid , about 8 mm. long.
Type locality : Mountains of the Sacramento, California. Distribution : California, on the western slope of the Sierra Nevada.
