Perennial, with a thick root and short caudex ; stems several from the caudex, erectascending to decumbent, 1-2.5 dm. high, tomentose, few-leaved; stipules ovate, the lower membranous, brownish and entire, the upper broad, entire or incised ; leaves with short petioles, densely white silky-villous ; leaflets crowded and often somewhat verticillate, about 1 cm. long, cuneate and deeply cut-toothed at the apex, with lanceolate divisions ; stemleaves similar, but with fewer leaflets ; inflorescence dense in the typical form or in the variety open; flowers 1-1.5 cm, in diameter ; hypanthium silky-villous ; bractlets oblong or lanceolate, acute, usually. much shorter than the triangular-ovate, acute or acuminate sepals ; petals obcordate, 5-10 mm. long, exceeding the calyx ; stamens 20 ; pistils many ; stylesfiliform.

Distribution : Mountains of California and adjacent Nevada.
