Es podria confondre amb la vaca comuna (Torpedo torpedo), però aquest darrer té unes taques blaves molt característiques a l'esquena, les quals són absents a la vaca tremolosa.[36] No té valor comercial, tot i que és pescada de manera accidental mitjançant bous d'arrossegament, tresmalls i soltes.[29] Disposa d'un curiós sistema per a orientar-se: pot emetre petits polsos elèctrics, els quals reboten al relleu del fons o als obstacles del voltant. Llavors, rep de nou el rebot de l'estímul elèctric que havia fet i així sap el que li envolta. Aquest sistema és com una mena d'autèntic radar i això li permet nedar en aigües molt tèrboles o de nit, i detectar les seues preses.[36]
Els exemplars més vells solen fer uns 60 cm de llargada total (encara que en alguns casos poden arribar als 100) i 3 kg de pes.[37][38] Té el cos aplanat dorsiventralment. Les aletes pectorals, el cap i el tronc formen un disc pla i gairebé arrodonit. A falta d'escates, el cos és recobert per una abundant mucositat. La cara ventral és blanquinosa, mentre que la dorsal és tacada de diferents tons ocres i marronosos. No té un morro definit i se li uneix amb les aletes laterals. Té entre 104 i 108 vèrtebres. Els mascles presenten un parell d'òrgans copuladors externs. Té la capacitat de produir descàrregues elèctriques d'entre 45 i 220 volts gràcies a uns òrgans electrògens que són, en realitat, un conjunt de plaques motores muntades en sèrie que actuen com una pila elèctrica. Es localitzen darrere els ulls, a la zona central del disc. Els fa servir per matar o paralitzar les seues preses, però també com a sistema de defensa.[29][30][36][39][40]
És un peix d'aigua marina i salabrosa, nocturn, associat als esculls, el qual viu molt a prop del fons o colgada a la sorra, fina o gruixuda, fins als 370 m de fondària. Evita les temperatures per damunt dels 20 °C.[29][30][36][41][42][43]
Es nodreix a la nit, a base de petits mol·luscs, crustacis i peixos bentònics (Trachurus, Mugil, Mullus, Dicentrarchus, Spondyliosoma, Boops, Labrus, Dascyllus i Pomacentrus) que captura sobre els fons de sorra, fang o roques on viu.[29][42]
És ovovivípar i la fecundació interna ocorre durant els mesos de novembre i desembre. Després d'uns deu mesos de gestació, les femelles donen a llum de 5 a 32 exemplars joves, d'uns 10–14 cm de longitud, i molt semblants als adults.[29][44][45][46]

Parejnok elektrický (Torpedo marmorata) je jedním z elektrických parejnoků žijících ve vodách v blízkosti Evropy. Má schopnost vytvářet elektrický proud, kterého používá při své obraně i lovu.
Žije hlavně ve východních oblastech Atlantského oceánu, na severu je jeho výskyt ohraničen Severním mořem (kde žije jen v létě) a na jihu jižním cípem Afriky, obývá také Středozemní moře. Nejčastěji se vyskytuje blízko u dna, ať bahnitého či písčitého, v hloubkách od 10 do 30 m, jsou zaznamenány jeho ponory i do hloubky až 370 m. Vyhýbá se teplé vodě nad 20 °C.
Je to paryba se silně zploštělým, diskovitým tělem pokrytým hladkou kůži bez šupin. Horní stranu těla má tmavě hnědou se světlými skvrnami (je proto snadno přehlédnutelný), spodní stranu má krémově bílou. Průměrně dorůstá do délky 60 až 80 cm, ojediněle až 1 m a jeho váha se pohybuje od 2 do 5 kg. Jeho prsní ploutve jsou zhruba stejně dlouhé jako široké. Má silný ocas nesoucí blízko u sebe dvě velikostně přibližně stejné trojúhelníkovité hřbetní ploutve. Stříkací otvory, kterými se zbavuje vody spolykané s potravou, se nacházejí za očima a jsou olemovány sedmi niťovitými výrůstky zahnutými dovnitř otvorů. Malá ústa obsahují řadu drobných ostrých zubů. V přední části trupu má párový orgán ve kterém vzniká elektrické napětí 220 V vyvedené do prsních ploutví.
Aktivní je hlavně v noci a za soumraku, ve dne leží částečně zahrabán u dna, nezakryty zůstávají jen oči a dýchací otvory. Loví menší ryby které ploutvemi obejme a po omráčení je polyká celé, živí se také korýši a dalšími bentickými bezobratlými živočichy.
Tyto paryby jsou vejcoživorodé, doba březosti trvá 9 až 10 měsíců. Pět až třicet potomků o velikosti 10 až 14 cm se rodí v listopadu a prosinci, ihned po narození jsou schopni dávat elektrické rány a samostatně se živit.
Ve vodách Atlantského oceánu nemají významnějších nepřátel. Dožívají se 15 až 20 let, samice obvykle žijí déle.
Pro lidskou populaci je bez hospodářského významu, jeho maso není považováno za potravinu. Svým elektrickým výbojem může ohrozit neopatrné potápěče, způsobit jim bolest a úlek.

The marbled electric ray (Torpedo marmorata) is a species of electric ray in the family Torpedinidae found in the coastal waters of the eastern Atlantic Ocean from the North Sea to South Africa. This benthic fish inhabits rocky reefs, seagrass beds, and sandy and muddy flats in shallow to moderately deep waters. It can survive in environments with very little dissolved oxygen, such as tidal pools. The marbled electric ray has a nearly circular pectoral fin disc and a muscular tail that bears two dorsal fins of nearly equal size and a large caudal fin. It can be identified by the long, finger-like projections on the rims of its spiracles, as well as by its dark brown mottled color pattern, though some individuals are plain-colored. Males and females typically reach 36–38 cm (14–15 in) and 55–61 cm (22–24 in) long respectively.
Nocturnal and solitary, the marbled electric ray can often be found lying the sea floor buried except for its eyes and spiracles. This slow-moving predator feeds almost exclusively on small bony fishes, which it ambushes from the bottom and subdues with strong electric bursts. It defends itself by turning towards the threat, swimming in a loop, or curling up with its underside facing outward, while emitting electric shocks to drive off the prospective predator. Its paired electric organs are capable of producing 70–80 volts of electricity. This species is aplacental viviparous, with the developing embryos sustained by yolk and histotroph ("uterine milk") produced by the mother. Mating takes place from November to January, and females bear litters of 3–32 pups every other year after a gestation period of 9–12 months. The newborn ray is immediately capable of using electricity to hunt.
The electric shock delivered by a marbled electric ray can be severe but is not directly life-threatening. Its electrogenic properties have been known since classical antiquity, when live rays were used to treat conditions such as chronic headaches. This and other electric ray species are used as model organisms in biomedical research. Various coastal demersal fisheries take the marbled electric ray as bycatch; captured rays are usually discarded as they have little commercial value. The impact of fishing on its population is uncertain, and thus International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) has listed this ray as Vulnerable. In the Mediterranean Sea, it remains the most common electric ray and in some areas may be increasing in number.
French naturalist Antoine Risso described the marbled electric ray as Torpedo marmorata in his 1810 Ichtyologie de Nice, ou histoire naturelle des poissons du département des Alpes maritimes (Ichthyology of Nice, or natural history of fishes in the Alpes-Maritimes). The specific epithet marmorata means "marbled" in Latin, and refers to the ray's color pattern.[2] Because no type specimens are known, in 1999 Ronald Fricke designated Risso's original illustration as the species lectotype.[3]
Within the genus Torpedo, the marbled electric ray belongs to the subgenus Torpedo, which differs from the other subgenus Tetronarce in having fringed margins on their spiracles and generally ornate dorsal coloration.[4] Other common names for this species include common crampfish, marbled torpedo, numbfish, and spotted torpedo.[5]
Widely distributed in the eastern Atlantic Ocean, the marbled electric ray is found from Scotland and the southern North Sea southward to the Cape of Good Hope,and north at least as far as Durban, likely further. South Africa. In addition it is present in the Mediterranean Sea, with higher densities in western areas.[6] It prefers temperatures cooler than 20 °C (68 °F).[1][7] This species is typically found at depths of 10–30 m (33–98 ft) off Britain and Ireland,[8] 20–100 m (66–328 ft) off Italy, and down to 200 m (660 ft) off Tunisia.[9] It has been recorded from as deep as 370 m (1,210 ft).[5] The marbled electric ray tends to be found deeper than the common torpedo (T. torpedo), which shares the southern portion of its range.[9]
Bottom-dwelling in nature, the marbled electric ray inhabits rocky reefs and seagrass beds, as well as nearby areas with sandy or muddy bottoms.[7] During warm summer months, pregnant females are known to migrate into Arcachon Bay in northwestern France, where they are commonly found in very shallow, muddy pools near oyster beds.[10][11] This species may conduct a northward migration in summer and autumn, into the waters of the British Isles.[8]
The body of the marbled electric ray is soft and flabby, and entirely lacks dermal denticles. The thick pectoral fin disc is nearly circular and comprises about 59–67% of the total length; the paired kidney-shaped electric organs are visible beneath the skin, outside of the small eyes. Immediately posterior to each eye is a large, oval spiracle, which bears 6–8 long, finger-like projections on the rim that almost meet at the center. On the "nape" behind the spiracles, there are 5–7 prominent mucous pores. Between the nostrils, there is a quadrangular curtain of skin much broader than long, that almost reaches the small, arched mouth. The teeth are small with a single pointed cusp, and are arranged with a quincunx pattern into a pavement-like band in either jaw. The five pairs of gill slits are small and located beneath the disc.[5][12][13]
The two dorsal fins have rounded apexes and are placed close together; the base of each fin measures about two-thirds its height. The rear of the first dorsal fin base is located behind the rear of the pelvic fin bases. The second dorsal fin is only slightly smaller than the first.[5][12] The short, robust tail has skin folds running along either side, and terminates in a large caudal fin shaped like a triangle with blunt corners.[7][13] The upper surface has a dark mottled pattern on a light to dark brown background; some individuals are uniformly brown.[12] The underside is plain off-white with darker fin margins.[14] This species can grow up to 1 m (3.3 ft) long,[5] though few exceed 36–38 cm (14–15 in) long for males and 55–61 cm (22–24 in) long for females. The much larger sizes attained by females can be attributed to the resource investment needed for reproduction. There seems to be little geographic variation in maximum size.[15][16] The maximum weight on record is 3 kg (6.6 lb).[5]
Solitary and slow-moving,[14] the marbled electric ray may remain motionless for several days at a time.[10] It is more active at night and spends much of the day buried in sediment with only the eyes and spiracles showing.[1] Consistent with its sluggish nature, the marbled electric ray has a low blood oxygen carrying capacity and heart rate (10–15 beats/min), and consumes less oxygen than other sharks and rays of similar size.[10] It is highly tolerant of being deprived of oxygen (hypoxia), allowing it to cope with deoxygenated bottom waters or being stranded in small pools by the falling tide. The ray stops breathing entirely when the oxygen partial pressure in the water drops below 10–15 Torr, and can survive such a state for at least five hours. It deals with extreme hypoxia by coupling anaerobic glycolysis to additional energy-producing pathways in its mitochondria, which serves to slow down the accumulation of potentially harmful lactate within its cells.[17]
Like other members of its family, the marbled electric ray can produce a strong electric shock for attack and defense, produced by a pair of electric organs derived from muscle tissue. Each electric organ consists of 400–600 vertical columns, with each column composed of a stack of roughly 400 jelly-filled "electroplates" that essentially act like a battery.[11] This ray has been measured producing up to 70–80 volts, and the maximum potential of the electric discharge has been estimated to be as high as 200 volts. The strength of the electric shock declines progressively as the ray becomes fatigued.[13] Experiments in vitro have found that the nerves innervating the electric organ essentially stop functioning at temperatures below 15 °C (59 °F). As the water temperature in the wild regularly drops below this threshold in winter, it is possible that the ray does not use its electric organ for part of the year. Alternately, the ray may have a yet-unknown physiological mechanism to adapt electric organ function to the cold.[18]
Known parasites of the marbled electric ray include the tapeworms Anthocephalum gracile[19] and Calyptrobothrium riggii,[20] the leeches Pontobdella muricata and Trachelobdella lubrica,[21] the monogeneans Amphibdella torpedinis,[22] Amphibdelloides kechemiraen,[23] A. maccallumi,[22] A. vallei,[23] Empruthotrema raiae, E. torpedinis,[24] and Squalonchocotyle torpedinis,[25] and the nematodes Ascaris torpedinis and Mawsonascaris pastinacae.[7]
The marbled electric ray is an ambush predator that employs electricity to capture prey. Vision is of little importance in hunting, as the ray's eyes are often obscured as it lies buried on the bottom. Instead, it likely relies on the mechanoreceptors of its lateral line, as it only attacks moving prey. The electroreceptive ampullae of Lorenzini may also contribute to prey detection.[26]
Small, benthic bony fishes constitute over 90% of the marbled electric ray's diet by weight;[27] these include gobies, hake, sea bass, mullets, jack mackerel, sea breams, goatfish, damselfish, wrasses, conger eels, and flatfish.[5][9][12] Cephalopods such as European squid (Loligo vulgaris) and elegant cuttlefish (Sepia elegans) are a minor secondary food source. There is a single record of an individual that had swallowed a penaeid prawn, Penaeus kerathurus,[27] and a study of captive rays found that they reject live Macropodia crabs.[28] Off southern France, by far the most important prey species is the leaping mullet (Liza saliens).[27] Food items are swallowed whole; there is a record of a ray 41 cm (16 in) long that had consumed a three-bearded rockling (Gaidropsarus vulgaris) 34 cm (13 in) long.[12]
Two distinct types of prey capture behavior have been observed in the marbled electric ray. The first is "jumping", used by the ray to attack prey fish that swim close to its head, typically no farther than 4 cm (1.6 in). In the "jump", the ray pulls back its head and then thrusts its disc upwards, reaching about two or three times as high as the prey fish is from the bottom. Simultaneously, it makes a single tail stroke and produces a high-frequency (230–430 Hz, increasing with temperature) burst of electricity. The initial electric burst is very short, containing only 10–64 pulses, but is still strong enough to cause tetanic contraction in the body of the prey fish, often breaking its vertebral column. As the ray glides forward, the motion of the jump sweeps the now-paralyzed prey beneath it, whereupon it is enveloped by the disc and maneuvered to the mouth. Electric bursts continues to be produced during this process; the total number of electric pulses over a single jump increases with size, ranging from 66 in a newborn 12 cm (4.7 in) long to 340 in an adult 45 cm (18 in) long. The jump lasts no more than two seconds.[26][28]
The second type of prey capture behavior is "creeping", used by the ray for stationary or slow-moving prey; this includes stunned prey that may have drifted out of reach from a jumping attack. In creeping, the ray makes small up and down motions of its disc coupled with small beats of its tail. The raising of the disc draws water beneath it and pulls the prey towards the ray, while the lowering of the disc and the tail beats move the ray towards the prey in small increments. When it reaches the prey, the ray opens its mouth to suck it in. Short electric bursts are produced as necessary, depending on the movement of the prey, and continue through ingestion.[28]
Because of its size and electrical defenses, the marbled electric ray does not often fall prey to other animals such as sharks.[7] This species exhibits different defensive behaviors depending on whether a prospective predator grasps it by the disc or the tail. A ray touched on the disc will quickly turn toward the threat while producing electric shocks; this is followed by it fleeing in a straight line, after which it may re-bury itself. A ray touched on the tail will propel itself upward into a loop; if it has not escaped after the maneuver, the ray will curl into a ring with the belly facing outward, so as to present the area of its body with the highest electric field gradient (the underside of the electric organs) towards the threat; these behaviors are accompanied by short, strong electric shocks. The ray tends to produce more electric bursts when protecting its tail than when protecting its disc.[28]
The marbled electric ray exhibits aplacental viviparity, in which the developing embryos are nourished initially by yolk, which is later supplemented by nutrient-rich histotroph ("uterine milk") produced by the mother. Adult females have two functional ovaries and uteruses; the inner lining of the uterus bears a series of parallel lengthwise folds.[29] The reproductive cycle for females is probably biennial, while males are capable of mating every year. Mating occurs from November to January, and the young are born the following year after a gestation period of 9–12 months.[15][16] The litter size ranges from 3 to 32, increasing with the size of the female.[12][16]
The electric organs first appear when the embryo is 1.9–2.3 cm (0.75–0.91 in) long, at which time it has distinct eyes, pectoral and pelvic fins, and external gills. At an embryonic length of 2.0–2.7 mm (0.079–0.106 in), the gill clefts close dorsally, leaving the gill slits beneath the disc as in all rays. At the same time, the four blocks of primordial cells that make up each electric organ rapidly coalesce together. The embryo's pectoral fins enlarge and fuse with the snout at a length of 2.8–3.7 cm (1.1–1.5 in), giving it the typical circular electric ray shape. When the embryo is 3.5–5.5 cm (1.4–2.2 in) long, the external gills are resorbed and pigmentation develops. The embryo can produce electric discharges by a length of 6.6–7.3 cm (2.6–2.9 in). The strength of the discharge increases by a magnitude of 105 over the course of gestation, reaching 47–55 volts by an embryonic length of 8.6–13 cm (3.4–5.1 in), close to that of an adult.[11]
Newborns measure approximately 10–14 cm (3.9–5.5 in) long,[1] and are immediately capable of performing characteristic predatory and defensive behaviors.[11] Males mature sexually at approximately 21–29 cm (8.3–11.4 in) long and five years of age, while females mature significantly larger and older at 31–39 cm (12–15 in) long and twelve years of age. The maximum lifespan is 12–13 years for males and around 20 years for females.[1]
The shock delivered by the marbled electric ray can be painful but is seldom life-threatening, although there is a danger of a shocked diver becoming disoriented underwater.[7] Its electrogenic properties have been known since classical antiquity, leading it and other electric fishes to be used in medicine. The ancient Greeks and Romans applied live rays to those afflicted with conditions such as chronic headaches and gout, and recommended that its meat be eaten by epileptics.[14][30]

It can be identified by the long, finger-like projections on the rims of its spiracles, as well as by its dark brown mottled color pattern, though some individuals are plain-colored. Males and females typically reach 36–38 cm (14–15 in) and 55–61 cm (22–24 in) long respectively.
Nocturnal and solitary, the marbled electric ray can often be found lying the sea floor buried except for its eyes and spiracles. This slow-moving predator feeds almost exclusively on small bony fishes, which it ambushes from the bottom and subdues with strong electric bursts. It defends itself by turning towards the threat, swimming in a loop, or curling up with its underside facing outward, while emitting electric shocks to drive off the prospective predator. Its paired electric organs are capable of producing 70–80 volts of electricity. This species is aplacental viviparous, with the developing embryos sustained by yolk and histotroph ("uterine milk") produced by the mother. Mating takes place from November to January, and females bear litters of 3–32 pups every other year after a gestation period of 9–12 months. The newborn ray is immediately capable of using electricity to hunt.
The electric shock delivered by a marbled electric ray can be severe but is not directly life-threatening. Its electrogenic properties have been known since classical antiquity, when live rays were used to treat conditions such as chronic headaches. This and other electric ray species are used as model organisms in biomedical research. Various coastal demersal fisheries take the marbled electric ray as bycatch; captured rays are usually discarded as they have little commercial value. The impact of fishing on its population is uncertain, and thus International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) has listed this ray as Vulnerable. In the Mediterranean Sea, it remains the most common electric ray and in some areas may be increasing in number.

La torpille marbrée (Torpedo marmorata) ou raie marbrée[1], est un poisson « électrique » vivant dans les eaux peu profondes entre 2 et 20 m de fond (exceptionnellement jusqu'à 100 m).
Son biotope est constitué de fonds sableux ou vaseux ou encore de champs de posidonies. Elle est réputée ne pas apprécier les températures inférieures à 20 °C. Cette raie est nocturne, elle reste le plus souvent cachée dans le sable la journée.
On la rencontre en Atlantique, des côtes anglaise et belge (rarement[2]) jusqu'à l'Afrique du Sud, et en Méditerranée.
La torpille marbrée mesure de 60 à 100 cm de long pour un poids maximum de 3 kg.
Dans la région antérieure du corps, un organe électrique pair borde sa colonne vertébrale. Il peut produire et libérer une décharge électrique dont la tension peut atteindre de 40 à 220 V et l'intensité de 7 à 10 A à une fréquence pouvant aller jusqu'à 600 Hz. Même si ces décharges sont parfois très douloureuses, elles ne représentent habituellement pas de véritable danger en elles-mêmes pour l'homme. Toutefois, un spécimen de grande taille serait susceptible de provoquer un accident de plongée (remontée catastrophe à la suite d'un choc douloureux)[3].
Espèce ovovivipare, la femelle met au monde 5 à 35 petits chaque année. Le nombre de petits dépendra de la taille de la femelle. Plus celle-ci est de taille conséquente, plus il y aura de petits. La période de reproduction a lieu entre octobre et décembre. L’incubation dure une dizaine de semaines. Une fois sortis, les petits mesureront 10 à 15 cm.
À l'heure actuelle, celui-ci n'est pas connu. Cependant, il semblerait que les femelles soient plus grosses que les mâles.
La raie torpille est carnivore, elle se nourrit principalement de petits poissons benthiques (vivant au fond) mais également de crustacés ou céphalopodes (petites seiches). Pour cela, elle les paralyse avec un choc électrique avant de les manger.
Cette espèce est parasitée par un annélide (ver segmenté) connu sous le nom de Branchellion torpedinis (petite sangsue marine).
Les femelles vivent plus longtemps que les mâles (une vingtaine d'années contre 12 ou 13 pour les mâles). La Raie torpille est mature sexuellement à l'âge de 3 ans. Les électrocytes commencent à se développer dès que les embryons pèsent 1 gramme. Ainsi, dès leur naissance, les petits sont capables de capturer des petits poissons.
Ce poisson assez peu fréquent mord parfois les appâts destinés aux poissons plats (soles et raies notamment). Il est recommandé de ne pas le prendre si l'on veut éviter ses désagréables et puissantes décharges électriques. S'il est capturé dans un filet, il faut utiliser un outil isolant comme un bâton de bois pour le libérer en évitant tout contact. Sa consommation peut être pratiquée sans danger à compter de la mort de l'animal.
Sa chair est appréciée, bien que fade comme celle de toutes les autres raies, avec une sauce au beurre blanc par exemple. Son foie bouilli deux minutes avec des herbes et dégusté sur un toast avec un morceau de beurre est apprécié de certains.

É unha especie común que se encontra nas costas do Atlántico oriental, entre os 60° N e os 35°S, e entre os 18° W e os 36° E, desde o norte das illas Británicas até o cabo da Boa Esperanza, en Suráfrica, e no mar Mediterráneo. No mar do Norte e no Kattegat é pouco común, e no mar Negro está ausente.[1][3]
De costumes nocturnos, o peixe permanece xeralmente enterrando no fondo durante o día, sobresaíndo só os ollos e os espiráculos. Cos seus órganos eléctricos pode producir descargas de até 200 volts e 8 ampères. As súas electrocélulas comezan a funcionar cando o embrión pesa aproximadamente 1 g, e os órganos eléctricos son funcionais antes mesmo do nacemento, polo que as crías acabadas de nacer poden utilizar xa as descargas para a captura das súas presas[1]
Aliméntase basicamente de pequenos peixes, moluscos e crustáceos bentónicos.[1][2][4]
Ovovivíparo, as femias teñen un período de xestación de dez meses. O número de crías, que nacen ao final do verán, varía entre 5 e 30, segundo o tamaño da nai.[2][4]
A especie Torpedo marmorata foi descrita por primeira vez polo naturalista nizardo Giuseppe Antonio Risso, máis coñecido como Antoine Risso,[3][6][7] na súa obra Ichthyologie de Nice ou Histoire naturelle des poissons du département des Alpes Maritimes. Ler en liña, editada en París por F. Schoell.

A primeira cita de esta especie nas costas galegas débese a Cornide, en 1788, co nome de Raya torpedo, no seu pioneiro Ensayo de una historia de los peces y otras producciones marinas de la costa de Galicia. Xa no século XX as primeiras citas son de de Buen.[2]
Sendo unha especie frecuente nas costas de Galicia, e debido á unha das súas prinicpais características (comúns a todos os torpedos) de producir descargas eléctricas, non é de estrañar que teña moitos nomes vernáculos. Así, Ríos Panisse, no volume I da súa monumental Nomenclatura recolle, entre outros, o seguintes:

Pola súa parte, o Gran dicionario Xerais da lingua propón raia eléctrica, ao lado de ortiga, pero non recolle estruga (só o fai para os significados de planta, e de actinia), aínda que remite as voces tembla e tembladoira ao non recollido estruga (peixe).[11]
A especie Torpedo marmorata parece ter unha ampla área de distribución no Atlántico oriental e no mar Mediterráneo, e a súa bioloxía é relativamente ben coñecida; porén, a súa abundancia e as posíbeis ameazas que ten que soportar non son ben coñecidas en toda a súa área de dispersión. Datos obtidos da pesca de arrastre indican que esta especie de torpedo é máis común que outras da familia no norte do mar Mediterráneo, e pode que estea aumentando nas augas costeiras de Italia. Pero pouco se sabe das tendencias da evolución da súa poboación ou do impacto das pescarías de África occidental e do resto da súa área, onde o esforzo da pesca de arrastre é alto. Polo tanto, a Unión Internacional para a Conservación da Natureza e dos Recursos Naturais (UICN) avalía na actualidade o status da especie como DD (datos insuficientes), mentres que non se poida obter información sobre o estado da poboación en toda a súa área de despersión.[1]
Capturado como captura incidental en pescarías de arrastre, trasmallos costeiros e redes e palangres de fondo. Non se pesca comercialmente e a miúdo bótase no mar debido ao seu baixo valor comercial.[12] Hai pouca información dispoñíbel nas capturas desta especie como resultado dos descartes no mar e dos poucos datos obtidos nos desembarques. A presión da pesca de arrastre é relativamente intensiva na plataforma continental da África occidental.[1]
As medidas para asegurar a conservación da especie deben incluír os descartes dos individuos vivos, a mellora do coñecemento dos datos pesqueiros, a identificación de áreas de cría importantes e o establecemento de áreas protexidas para as especies demersais. Tamén é necesaria a investigación sobre a abundancia, ameazas, tendencias da poboación e capturas na pesca en toda a área de dispersión da especie.[1]
A pesar de que se captura adoito polos pecadores de arrastre, rara vez é utilizado como alimento para os humanos. Historicamente, no mar Adriático, afumábase e vendíase, aínda que a súa carne tiña pouco valor comercial.[13]

Hrökkviskata eða rafmagnsskata (fræðiheiti Torpedo marmorata) er botnlæg fisktegund sem lifir í austurhluta Atlantshafsins, frá Norðursjónum og að Suður-Afríku. Líkt og hrökkállinn getur hrökkviskatan gefið frá sér rafmagn. Skatan er botnlæg sem fyrr segir og lifir á grunnu eða meðaldjúpu svæði. Uggi hrökkviskötunnar er nánast hringlaga diskur sem umlykur hana auk þess er hún með sterkan sporð með tveimur baklægum uggum (dorsal fin) auk sporð-ugga (caudal fin). Hrökkviskatan er dökkbrún á litinn með ljósum blettum. Hængurinn getur orðið, á bilinu 36–38 cm og hrygnan 55–61 cm.

Gli organi elettrici si sviluppano negli embrioni già molto piccoli, diventando funzionali prima della nascita. I neonati sono già in grado di emettere scariche per catturare le prede. Possono produrre scariche fino a 220 volt.
Specie vivipara, i neonati misurano da 10 a 14 centimetri circa.
Si nutre di pesci, catturati grazie agli organi elettrici.

De gemarmerde sidderrog (Torpedo marmorata) is een soort uit het geslacht en de familie van de sidderroggen (Torpedinidae).
De gemarmerde sidderrog kan een lengte van hoogstens 1 meter bereiken, afhankelijk van het gebied zijn de mannetjes tussen de 21 en 30 cm geslachtsrijp en de vrouwtjes tussen de 30 en 40 cm (hoe zuidelijker, hoe kleiner geslachtsrijp). Het gewicht bedraagt 10 tot 13 kg. Deze sidderrog is van boven grijsrood, gemarmerd met bruine en gele vlekken. De buik is wit. Net als andere haaien en roggen heeft deze rog een elektrisch orgaan (Ampullen van Lorenzini) waarmee prooien kunnen worden opgespoord.[2]
De gemarmerde sidderrog is een nachtdier. Net als bij andere soorten sidderroggen heeft de gemarmerde sidderrog naast de Ampullen van Lorenzini ook een elektrisch orgaan waarmee hij stroomstoten met een hoge spanning kan afgeven tot wel 200 volt, om prooien mee te verlammen of ter verdediging. Het voedsel van de gemarmerde sidderrog bestaat uit kleine bodembewonende vissen en macrofauna.[3]
Een worp bestaat meestal uit 5 tot 35 jongen.
Deze soort komt wijd verspreid voor in het oostelijk deel van de Atlantische Oceaan van Kaap de Goede Hoop tot het noorden van de Britse Eilanden en in de Middellandse Zee. Het dier leeft op de zeebodem op diepten tussen de 10 en 100 m, meestal verborgen onder een laagje zand of modder waaruit alleen de ogen steken.
Langs de Nederlandse kust is de gemarmerde sidderrog een zeldzame verschijning. Er zijn drie gedocumenteerde vangsten tussen 1949 en 1968.[2] En een vangst op 18 september 2013 op de Maasvlakte.[4]
Net als alle andere bodembewonende soorten haaien en roggen vormt de visserij met bodemsleepnetten en de langelijnvisserij (met lijnen op de zeebodem) een bedreiging. Voor de beroepsvisserij is de gemarmerde sidderrog van geen enkel belang, hij wordt als bijvangst meestal over boord gegooid. Vooral op het continentaal plat ten westen van Afrika is de visserijdruk hoog. Er is geen hard bewijs dat de soort achteruit gaat. Eerder het tegendeel, in het noordelijk deel van de Middellandse Zee zijn aanwijzingen dat deze sidderrog iets toeneemt. De gemarmerde sidderrog staat daarom als onzeker (data deficient)op de internationale Rode Lijst van de IUCN.[3][1]

Передні носові клапани короткі, поєднані між собою. Зяброві промені відсутні. Тулуб майже дископодібний. Плавники на груді великі, біля них розташовані електричні органи, що мають бобовоподібну форму. Черевні плавники — короткі. Хвіст короткий, проте сильний, плавники на хвості великі й більше за спинний. Забарвлення спини являє собою мармуровий візерунок. Звідси походять назва цього скату.
Полюбляє в тропічних, субтропічних і помірно теплих водах всіх океанів і зустрічаються від прибережних мілководь до глибини 500 м. Часто зустрічається біля рифів або у солонуватій воді. Малорухливий, погано плаваючий скат, зазвичай лежать на дні, частково зарившись у пісок або мул. Живляться безхребетними, перш за все, ракоподібними, молюсками, хробаками, рибою, зокрема, камбалою, вуграми, лососем вагою близько 2 кг, акулами. Іноді скат охоплює здобич своїми грудними плавцями і вбиває її розрядом струму. Може завдавати сильні електричні розряди людям, які наступили на них у воді або взяли їх в руки. Розряди 40-220 вольт силою у 7-10 ампер.
Це яйцеживородна риба. Самиця народжує від 5-35 ембріонів.
Досить звичайний у берегів східній частині Атлантичного океану до південної Африки, а також у Середземному морі.
Два спинных плавника с закруглёнными вершинами расположены близко друг к другу. Основание каждого из них составляет около 2/3 их высоты. Кончик первого спинного плавника расположен на уровне кончика оснований брюшных плавников. Первый спинной плавник крупнее второго[12]. Хвост короткий и толстый, по бокам пролегают кожаные складки. Они оканчивается треугольным хвостовым плавником с закруглёнными углами[8][13]. Дорсальная поверхность тела окрашена в тёмно-коричневый цвет и покрыта многочисленными пятнами. Некоторые особи имеют равномерную окраску без отметин[12]. Вентральная поверхность белая с более тёмными краями диска[14]. Максимальная зарегистрированная длина 100 см, хотя в среднем самцы и самки редко бывают длиннее 36—38 см и 55—61 см соответственно. Вероятно, существует географическая корреляция размеров. Максимальный зарегистрированный вес 3 кг[15].
Ведущие одиночный образ жизни и медлительные мраморные гнюсы способны оставаться без движения в течение нескольких дней[9]. Днем они лежат на дне под слоем осадков, из-под которого видны только глаза и брызгальца. Медленное сердцебиение (10—15 ударов в минуту) и низкая насыщаемость крови кислородом позволяет им потреблять кислорода меньше по сравнению с акулами и скатами сопоставимых размеров[9]. Они устойчивы к гипоксии и способны выживать в бедных кислородом придонных водах и приливных бассейнах. Когда парциальное давление падает ниже 10—15 мм рт. ст., мраморные электрические скаты вообще перестают дышать и могут прожить в таком состоянии до 5 часов. Им удаётся справиться с экстремальными условиями благодаря анаэробному гликолизу и дополнительному альтернативному пути выработки энергии в митохондриях, которые замедляют накопление в клетках потенциально вредоносных лактатов[16]. Подобно прочим представителям своего отряда для защиты и нападения мраморные гнюсы способны генерировать электричество. Каждый из их парных электрических органов состоит из 400—600 вертикальных столбцов, в свою очередь представляющих собой кипу примерно 400 наполненных желеобразной массой «электроплат», действующих подобно батарее[10]. Электрический разряд, производимый этими скатами имеет напряжение 70—80 вольт, а максимальный потенциал оценивается в 200 вольт. Скат испускает серию разрядов, постепенно «батарея» разряжается и напряжение падает[13]. Эксперименты в искусственных условиях показали, что при температуре ниже 15 °С нервы электрических органов перестают эффективно функционировать. Когда в живой природе зимой температура воды естественным образом понижается, возможно, мраморные гнюсы перестают пользоваться этими органами. В противном случае скаты могут обладать неизвестным пока физиологическим механизмом, адаптирующим эти органы к холоду[17].
На мраморных гнюсах паразитируют ленточные черви Anthocephalum gracile[18] и Calyptrobothrium riggii[19], пиявки Pontobdella muricata и Trachelobdella lubrica[20], моногенеи Amphibdella torpedinis[21], Amphibdelloides kechemiraen[22], A. maccallumi[21], A. vallei[22], Empruthotrema raiae, E. torpedinis[23] и Squalonchocotyle torpedinis[24] и нематоды Ascaris torpedinis и Mawsonascaris pastinacae[8].
Мраморные гнюсы охотятся из засады и оглушают жертву электрическим разрядом. Зрение не играет важной роли в ходе охоты, когда скаты лежат на дне их глаза часто скрыты под слоем осадков. Вместо зрительных сигналов гнюсы реагируют на сигналы, поступающие от механорецепторов боковой линии, поэтому они нападают только на движущийся объект. Кроме того, засечь добычу им помогают ампулы Лоренцини[25].
Рацион мраморных гнюсов на 90 % состоит из донных костистых рыб, таких как мерлузы, бычки, лавраки, барабульки, ставриды, спаровые, кефаль, помацентровые, губаны, морские угри и камбалы[12][15][26]. Вторичным источником пищи являются головоногие, например, обыкновенный кальмар и Sepia elegans. Однажды одна особь мраморного гнюса проглотила креветку семейства высших раковruen Penaeus kerathurus[27]. Исследования, проведённые в неволе, показали, что эти скаты отвергают в качестве пищи крабов, принадлежащих к роду Macropodiaruen[28]. У южного побережья Франции наиболее важным компонентом рациона мраморных гнюсов являются остроносы[27]. Скаты глотают добычу целиком: однажды особь длиной 41 см проглотила морского трёхусого морского налима размером 34 см[12].
У мраморных гнюсов наблюдается два типа охотничьего поведения. Первое — «прыжковое», применяется, когда рыба плавает рядом с головой ската, как правило, не дальше 4 см. Совершая прыжок, гнюс выталкивает вперёд голову и взмывает над жертвой. Одновременно с этим он бьёт хвостом и создаёт высокочастотный (230—240 Гц) электрический разряд, частота которого повышается с температурой. Первый разряд очень короткий, состоит из 10—64 импульсов, достаточно сильных, чтобы вызвать тетаническое мышечное сокращение, которое иногда ломает жертве позвоночник. По мере того, как скат скользит вперёд, движение воды, созданное прыжком, заносит парализованную добычу под него, после чего он оборачивает её диском и отправляет в рот. В течение всего процесса гнюс продолжает создавать электрические разряды: общее количество импульсов, испущенных за один прыжок, напрямую коррелирует с размером и возрастом, колеблясь от 66 у новорожденного ската длиной 12 см до 340 у взрослой особи длиной 45 см. Сам прыжок длится не более 2 секунд[25][28].
Второй тип охотничьего поведения, «подползающий», мраморные гнюсы используют, нападая на неподвижную или медлительную добычу, в том числе оглушённую и отнесённую после прыжка прочь течением. Подползая, гнюс совершает волнообразные движения краями диска и слегка бьёт хвостом. Созданное подъёмом диска течение подгоняет жертву к охотнику, а опуская диск и ударяя хвостом скат потихоньку сам приближается к ней. Настигнув жертву гнюс открывает рот и засасывает её. При необходимости, если жертва двигается, он создаёт небольшие электрические разряды, которые могут продолжаться во время её поглощения[28].
Благодаря довольно крупным размерам и способности генерировать электричество мраморные гнюсы редко становятся добычей других животных, например, акул[8]. Обороняясь, скаты действуют по-разному, в зависимости от того, за какое место (за хвост или за диск) хищник пытается их схватить. В случае прикосновения к диску, гнюс быстро разворачивается в сторону угрозы и бьет током, после этого он спасается бегством по прямой и может снова закопаться в осадки. Когда дотрагиваются до хвоста, скат выворачивается наружу брюхом и сжимается в клубок; совершив этот манёвр, он не уплывает, а остаётся в таком положении, выставив максимально высоко по направлению к угрозе электрические органы. Эти движения сопровождаются сильными электрическими разрядами. Этот вид скатов с помощью электричества сильнее обороняет хвост, чем диск[28].
Мраморные гнюсы размножаются яйцеживорождением, сначала развивающиеся эмбрионы питаются желтком, а затем гистотрофом, вырабатываемым организмом матери. У взрослых самок имеется по два функциональных яичника и по две матки; внутренняя поверхность маток покрыта рядом продольных складок[29]. Репродуктивный цикл у самок, вероятно, длится 2 года, тогда как самцы способны размножаться ежегодно. Спаривание происходит с ноября по декабрь, новорожденные появляются на свет на следующий год спустя 9—12 месяцев[30][31]. В помёте 3—32 новорожденных, численность помёта напрямую зависит от размера самки[12][31].
Электрические органы начинают формироваться у эмбрионов длиной 1,9—2,3 см, к этому времени у них уже имеются глаза, грудные и брюшные плавники и внешние жабры. Когда эмбрионы вырастают до 2,0—2,7 см, дорсальные жаберные щели у них закрываются и остаются только вентральные, как у всех скатов. Одновременно с этим 4 блока первичных клеток, образующих электрические органы, объединяются между собой. У зародышей длиной 2,8—3,7 см грудные плавники увеличиваются и срастаются с рылом, образуя типичный для электрических скатов округлый диск. При длине 3,5—5,5 см исчезают внешние жабры и появляется пигментация. Эмбрионы длиной 6,6—7,3 см способны создавать электрический разряд. В течение беременности сила разряда увеличивается на величину 105 и у эмбрионов длиной 8,6—13 см достигает 47—55 вольт, что сопоставимо с силой разряда взрослых скатов[10].
Новорожденные появляются на свет длиной около 10—14 см и с самого рождения способны демонстрировать характерное охотничье и оборонительное поведение[10]. Самцы и самки достигают половой зрелости при длине 21—29 см в возрасте около 5 лет, и 31—39 см и 12 лет соответственно. Максимальная продолжительность жизни у самок оценивается в 20 лет[4].
Мраморные гнюсы способны нанести человеку болезненный, но не смертельный удар током, вероятно, они представляют некоторую опасность для аквалангистов, поскольку человек, будучи оглушённым, может захлебнуться[8]. Способность этих рыб производить электричество была известна с времён античности, её использовали в медицине. Древние греки и римляне прикладывали живых скатов для лечения головной боли и подагры, а также рекомендовали эпилептикам употреблять их мясо в пищу[14][32].
Эти скаты не представляют интереса для коммерческого рыболовства. В качестве прилова они могут попадаться при коммерческом донном промысле. Пойманных рыб, как правило, выбрасывают за борт. Мраморных гнюсов, наряду с прочими электрическими скатами, используют в качестве модельных организмов в биомедицинских исследованиях, поскольку их электрические органы богаты ацетилхолиновыми рецепторами, играющими важную роль в нервной системе человека[33].
По крайней мере, в северной части Средиземного моря эти скаты встречаются довольно часто, вероятно, наибольшей опасности популяция подвергается у берегов Италии. Данных для оценки Международным союзом охраны природы статуса сохранности вида недостаточно[4].
