In adult plumage, the distinction between sexes is based on the thickness of the black wing-edge:
- Male has black remiges (but for greyish-based primaries) and thus a broad black terminal bar covering almost half of the surface of the underwings.
- Female's remiges are only black at the tips, forming a thin black terminal bar on the underwings.
