A large member of the genus Megophrys at a maximum SVL of 76.7 mm. Dark and tan dorsally with an hourglass patter and a triangle between eyes a mahogany color. Flanks marbled dark brown. Upper lip banded dark brown on vinous grey-brown ground color. Orange flash coloration in groin area. Throat vinous grey-brown. Webbing is dark brown and iris is copper colored. Head is wider than long with a bluntly pointed and largely protruding snout. Distance between front of eyes is two times the distance between back of eyes. Nostrils are oval with a low flap of skin laterally, closer to eye than to tip of snout. The tympanum is distinct in this species as well as oval (60% of eye diameter). Tympanum-eye distance is 110% of tympanum diameter. No teeth are present, although a vomerine ridge is present. forearm is shorter than hand, relative finger lengths are 2

Collected at 800 m on Phnom Aural calling from on top of a boulder 0.2 m from a cascade of a mountian stream in hill evergreen forest. Many males were found along mountain streams from 500-1140 m in habitat with evergreen forest. Males were always observed within 1m of the stream and usually no further than 0.3 m from fast-flowing water.

Xenophrys auralensis (Aural horned frog; Khmer: កង្កែបស្នែងឱរ៉ាល់, kangkaep snaeng aoreal) is a species of frog in the family Megophryidae. It is endemic to Cambodia where it is only known from Phnom Aural, the highest mountain of Cambodia.[2] Its type locality is within the Phnom Aural Wildlife Sanctuary.[3] Its natural habitats are tropical moist lowland forests, moist montane forests, and rivers.[1]

Megophrys auralensis est une espèce d'amphibiens de la famille des Megophryidae[1].

Répartition

Cette espèce est endémique du Phnum Aoral au Cambodge[1]. Elle se rencontre entre 500 et 1 140 m d'altitude[2].

Description

Megophrys auralensis[3] mesure de 71 à 77 mm. Son est brun foncé avec un motif en forme de sablier et une marque triangulaire sur la tête. Ses flancs sont légèrement marbrés de brun foncé. Sa gorge est brun grisâtre vineux. Sa face ventrale et la face interne de ses membres est blanche avec des taches brun grisâtre vineux. Son iris est cuivré.

Étymologie

Son nom d'espèce, composé de aural et du suffixe latin -ensis, « qui vit dans, qui habite », lui a été donné en référence au lieu de sa découverte, le Phnum (« mont ») Aoral (Phnom Aural en anglais).
