Polygala rhysocarpa Blake, sp. nov
Stems few or several from a very slender annual root, 6.5-25 cm. high, erect or ascending, very slender, simple or subsimple, densely puberulous with spreading glanduliform hairs; lowest leaves obovate, 3-5 mm. long, 0.8-1.8 mm. wide, acute, slightly fleshy, puberulent like the stem; stem-leaves alternate, oblanceolate to linear, 4-14 mm. long, 0.5-1.5 mm. wide, acuminate at each end, puberulent; peduncles 8-22 mm. long; racemes cylindric, acute or acuminate, dense above, loose below, 3-5 mm. thick, the axis 1.4-8.5 cm. long; bracts lance-subulate, ciliolate, deciduous, 1.3 mm. long; pedicels 0.4-0.7 mm. long; flowers whitish; sepals ovate or ovalovate to lance-elliptic, obtuse to subacuminate, slightly glandular-denticulate, 1-1.6 mm. long; wings obovate, 2-2.2 mm. long, 1.1-1.2 mm. wide, rounded, cuneate at base, 3-5-veined, the costa distinct and greenish; keel 1.8-2 mm. long, the crest on each side of a cuneate lamella and 2 entire or 2-parted lobes; capsule obliquely oval, emarginate, rounded at base, glabrous, whitish with pinkish margin, with 6-7 prominent slightly oblique mostly bifid greenish veins on each side of septum, narrowly margined especially on upper side with venose margin, almost winged on upper side at apex, 2.8-3 mm. long, 1.8-2.2 mm. wide; seed cylindric, curved, pilosulous, 1.8 mm. long; aril 1 mm. long, the 2 linear lobes appressed.
Type collected at Orizaba, Veracruz. Mexico, 1855, F. Mueller (herb. N. Y. Bot. Gard).
