Perennial, with a cespitose caudex; stem 5-7 dm. high, sparingly silky with appressed or slightly spreading hairs, branched above; basal leaves several, with petioles 1-2 dm. long, digitate, with about 7 leaflets, silky but green above, silky and somewhat tomentulose but scarcely white beneath ; leaflets oblanceolate or spatulate, deeply toothed or divided nearly halfway to the midrib, with lanceolate often somewhat divergent teeth ; stem-leaves smaller, with short petioles ; cyme many-flowered, loose and open ; hypanthium silky, in fruit about 8 mm. in diameter ; bractlets lanceolate, a little shorter than the ovate-lanceolate sepals, both acuminate and about 5 mm. long; corolla 10-15 mm. in diameter, yellow; petals obcordate, equaling or slightly exceeding the sepals ; stamens about 20 ; pistils many ; styles filiform.
Type locality : [In the original description no type was designated, but the following is so designated in the herbarium of the N. Y. Bot. Garden :] Braggs Creek, Alberta, Macoun 16746.
Distribution : Valleys, Manitoba to Alberta and Wyoming.

Potentilla rectiformis Rydberg, sp. nov
Perennial, with the habit of P. recta and P. sulphurea ; stem 6-10 dm. high, densely strigose ; leaves, except those of the inflorescence, 7-foliolate ; petioles with appressed pubescence ; leaflets oblanceolate or spatulate, 4-6 cm. long, coarsely cut-toothed with lanceolate teeth curved forward, appressed-pubescent on both sides or glabrate above ; stipules ovate, deeply cut-toothed, 1.5-2 cm. long; inflorescence many-flowered, flat-topped ; hypanthium. strigose, in fruit 7-8 mm. broad ; bractlets linear-lanceolate, 5-7 mm. long, about equaling the ovate-lanceolate acuminate sepals ; petals obcordate, 6-7 mm. long; stamens about 20 ; pistils many ; styles filiform.
Type collected on grassy gravelly flats at Pullman, Washington, in 1896, A. D. E. Elmer 69, Distribution : Type locality and vicinity, also adjacent Idaho and Montana.

Distribution.: Mountain valleys from Saskatchewan to British Columbia, Colorado, and Oregon .

Perennial, with a thick woody root and a short caudex ; stem stout, 4-8 dm. high, softly pubescent with appressed or slightly spreading hairs ; basal leaves digitately 7-foliolate ; petioles 1-2 dm. long, more or less pubescent with appressed or somewhat spreading hairs ; leaflets 4-8 cm. long, oblanceolate or narrowly obovate, cut-toothed with oblong, lanceolate, or triangular teeth, green but densely appressed-hairy above with short hairs, more or less tomentose beneath and silky on the veins ; stem-leaves similar but with shorter petioles ; inflorescence at first dense, congested, but later more open ; hypanthium silky, in fruit about 8 mm. broad ; bractlets oblong or lanceolate, shorter than the broadly lanceolate sepals, which are acuminate and 5-8 mm. long; petals rounded-obcordate, 6-8 mm. long ; stamens 20; pistils many; styles filiform.

Type locality : California.
Distribution : California and western Nevada.

Perennial, with a short rootstock and caudex ; stem slender, strict, about 8 dm. high, usually with ascending hairs; basal leaves digitately 5-7-foliolate ; petioles 1-1.5 dm. long, pubescent, with appressed or slightly spreading hairs ; leaflets narrowly oblanceolate, rather copiously hairy on both sides but green ; the middle one 4-6 cm. long ; the outer, especially if the leaves are 7-foliolate, small, 1-2 cm. long, cut-toothed with lanceolate teeth ; lower stem-leaves similar, the upper 3-foliolate and subsessile ; inflorescence few-flowered, with slender branches ; hypanthium silky, in fruit 6 mm. wide ; bractlets linear-lanceolate, about 3 mm. long ; sepals ovate-lanceolate, 5-6 mm. long, acuminate ; petals 6-7 mm. long, obovate, retuse ; stamens about 20 ; pistils many ; styles filiform.

A stout hoary perennial ; stems simple, about 6 dm. high, densely andV softly pubescent with long whitish hairs ; basal and lower stem-leaves usually 7-foliolate, digitate ; petioles about 1 dm. long, densely pubescent with spreading or refiexed hairs ; leaflets obovate tooblanceolate, obtuse, coarsely cleft nearly half way to the midrib, with lanceolate lobes, densely softpubescent on both sides, greenish above, whitish beneath ; upper stem-leaves 3-5-foliolate, similar, smaller, short-petioled ; stipules of the stem-leaves large, adnate to the petiole, ovate, often over 3 cm. long ; cyme rather open ; hypanthium and calyx densely white-pubescent; bractlets linear-lanceolate, about equaling the lanceolate sepals; petals yellow, 6-7 mm. long, obcordate, exceeding the sepals by about one fourth ; stamens about 20 ; pistils many ; styles filiform.
