Colonies. Heterothallic. White, cottony, and spreading, becoming granular and buff-colored; reverse red to brown. Conidia. "Macroconidia", small, clavate, thick-walled, echinulate, 12-18 × 4-7.5 μm, generally 1-septate but with a few spores 2- or even 3-septate. Ascomata. Globose, pale buff, 250-450 μm diam., excluding appendages; peridium about 50 μm thick; peridial hyphae pale yellow, colourless, septate, branching mostly dichotomous, occasionally verticillate, angle between branch and main hypha usually obtuse; cells thick-walled, echinulate, cylindrical, 8-20 μm (average 13 × 4-7 μm), sometimes narrower in one or two places; appendages of two sorts: (1) septate, smooth, tightly coiled, lateral or terminal; (2) elongate, slender, septate, hyphae up to 450 μm long, terminal. Asci. Subglobose, thin-walled, evanescent, 5.5-6.5 × 5-6 μm, 8 spored. Ascospores. Colourless, smooth or finely roughened, lenticular, 2.7-3.2 × 1.5-2 μm, yellow in mass.
