Thelephora is a genus of fungi in the family Thelephoraceae. The genus has a widespread distribution and contains about 50 species.^[2] Fruit bodies of species are leathery, usually brownish at maturity, and range in shape from coral-like tufts to having distinct caps. Almost all species in the genus are thought to be inedible,^[3] but Thelephora ganbajun is a gourmet fungus in Yunnan province of southwest China.^[4]

The generic name is derived from the Greek thele (θηλή) meaning nipple and phorus meaning bearing.^[5] Species in the genus are commonly known as "fiber fans" and "fiber vases".^[3]

Some Thelephora species are known to accumulate or even hyperaccumulate trace elements in fruit-bodies. Thelephora penicillata hyperaccumulates cadmium and arsenic.^[6]

Thelephora Ehrh. ex Willd. (chropiatka) – rodzaj grzybów należący do rodziny chropiatkowatych (Thelephoraceae)^[1].

Systematyka i nazewnictwo

Pozycja w klasyfikacji według Index Fungorum: Thelephoraceae, Thelephorales, Incertae sedis, Agaricomycetes, Agaricomycotina, Basidiomycota, Fungi^[1].

Synonimy: Merisma Pers., Phylacteria (Pers.) Pat., Pseudothelephora Lloyd, Scyphopilus P. Karst., Thelephora sect. Phylacteria Pers., Thelophora Clem.^[2].

Nazwę polską podał Feliks Teodorowicz w 1933 r. W polskim piśmiennictwie mykologicznym rodzaj ten opisywany był także jako pleśniak lub otocznica^[3].

Charakterystyka

Grzyby mikoryzowe, wytwarzające przeważnie ciemnobrązowe, rozetowate, lejkowate lub rozgałęzione owocniki o prawie gładkim hymenoforze, często pokrytym regularnie rozmieszczonymi brodawkami (gr. thele^[4]). Zarodniki chropiatek są eliptyczne lub nerkowate, graniaste, o powierzchni pokrytej kolcami lub brodawkami, barwy zółtobrązowej, a ich wysyp jest brązowy^[5]^[6].
