Die Fruchtbecher (Cupulae) sind mit verzweigten Stacheln besetzt. Die Stacheln bedecken die ganze Oberfläche des Fruchtbechers. Sie sind aufrecht und zugespitzt. Ein Fruchtbecher enthält ein bis vier Nüsse, die oval oder abgeflacht sind. Die Nüsse sind mindestens 4 mal 2,5 Zentimeter groß. Der Fruchtstiel ist mindestens 1,5 Zentimeter lang.
Blütezeit ist April. Die Fruchtreife erfolgt im September.
Die Art kommt in Thailand, Singapur, Malaysia und Indonesien vor. Sie wächst in tropischen Tieflandregenwäldern in 300 bis 400 m Seehöhe.

Castanopsis megacarpa grows as a tree up to 36 metres (120 ft) tall with a trunk diameter of up to 90 cm (35 in). The grey bark is smooth or slightly fissured. The coriaceous leaves measure up to 24 cm (9 in) long. Its roundish or ellipsoid nuts measure up to 7.5 cm (3.0 in) long.[2]
Castanopsis megacarpa grows naturally in Thailand, Borneo, Peninsular Malaysia and Singapore.[1][2] Its habitat is dipterocarp, kerangas or lower montane forests up to 1,400 m (4,600 ft) altitude.[2]
The wood is locally used in making domestic items.[2]
