The mammalian genus Tenrec has one species in it, the common tenrec, Tenrec ecaudatus, also called the tailless tenrec.It is one of six species in subfamily Tenrecinae, all of which superficially resemble the hedgehog.It is endemic to Madagascar, and has been introduced to surrounding islands.
