Indigenous to Hawaii but also found on New Caledonia in South Pacific. Elevation of this photo around 4080ft/1244m. In this area I often observe them growing near the base of an Ohia (Metrosideros polymorpha) tree, which creates an island of soil, water retention and partial shade in this relatively open, windy environment.
