Sternbergia colchiciflora is the smallest in its genus. The flowers are almost stalkless, 'sitting' on ground. Its short blooming season and small size make it almost invisible. In Israel it is rare and we grow it at the Jerusalem Botanical Gardens in our shelter garden for endangered species. For 4 years I missed its blooming, but yesterday I cought it.
Here it is agian, the tiniest bulb blooming for a very short time. For some strange reason TN people erased the older picture because there was a coin for scale, isn't it strange ???
Unlike other sternbergias, Sternbergia colchiciflora is widespread from Spain to the Himalaya. It is a small autumnal flower. In Israel it is rather rare and usually missed because of its small size and short blooming time.
