2011-04-16 Lower Austria, district Wien-Umgebung (mixed forest; 382 msm Quadrant 7862/1).Probably a male one (but difficult to tell as flowering period is over).Fungus (German: Rostpilz): Melampsora populneaID for fungus:
Stefanos Bulletin Board; as explained there, Melampsora populnea completes its
haplontic life cycle on Mercurialis perennis - fungi cells growing on it only have a single set of chromosomes, the half set of an (ordinary) diploid one. The main host in summer will be Populus tremula (I could follow the first part of the explanation on that German site linked to above, but I'm lost with the second one, concerning P. tremula, so I cannot even attempt a translation).
