Chelyocarpus je nevelký rod palem, zahrnující 4 druhy. Jsou to nevelké palmy s vějířovitými listy a přímým nebo poléhavým kmenem. Vyskytují se pouze v Jižní Americe. Nejznámějším a nejrozšířenějším druhem je Chelyocarpus ulei, rostoucí v Amazonii.
Zástupci rodu Chelyocarpus jsou malé palmy, dorůstající max. výšky do 5 metrů. Kmen je přímý (u druhu Ch. repens poléhavý), tenký a holý, s tenkými kroužky listových jizev. Listy jsou dlanité nebo krátce dlanitozpeřené (Ch. chuco), induplikátní, řapík je bez ostnů. Listové pochvy jsou vláknité. Čepel listů je členěná na jednoduše nebo vícekrát přeložené segmenty. Květenství vyrůstají mezi bázemi listů a jsou převislá, jednoduše nebo 2x větvená. Kalich a koruna jsou dvou až čtyřčetné. Tyčinek je 5 až 9. Gyneceum je složeno nejčastěji ze 2 až 3 plodolistů. Čnělka je krátká. Plody jsou jednosemenné, kulovité a u vrcholu mají zbytky vytrvalé čnělky. Mezokarp je tlustý a suchý, endokarp blanitý.[1]
Rod Chelyocarpus zahrnuje 4 druhy a je rozšířen výhradně v Jižní Americe. Chelyocarpus ulei má rozsáhlý areál rozšíření v Amazonii, kde roste v nadmořských výškách do 500 metrů. Ch. chuco roste v Brazílii a Bolívii. Ch. dianeurus je endemit západní Kolumbie, Ch. repens je endemit Peru.[1]
Rod Chelyocarpus je je v rámci systému palem řazen do podčeledi Coryphoideae a tribu Cryosophileae. Příbuzenské vztahy k ostatním zástupcům tohoto tribu nejsou dosud dořešeny.[2] Druh Ch. ulei byl popsán v roce 1920, ostatní druhy až v letech 1972 a 1988.[3]

Chelyocarpus bildet einen oder mehrere Stämme, diese sind schlank, kurzstämmig aufrecht oder kriechend. Die Palmen sind zwittrige Fächerpalmen unbewehrt und mehrmals blühend. Die Blätter sind häufig durch tiefe und flache Einschnitte zerteilt. Die Blattscheide ist faserig und dicht samthaarig, jung gold-braun. Im Alter zerfällt sie in lockere Fasern. Der Blattstiel ist lang. Die Blattspreite ist flach und dünn. Entlang der zentralen Falte ist sie deutlich über die Mitte oder fast bis zur Basis geteilt. Die dadurch entstehenden Hälften sind weiter in breite, einfach gefaltete Segmente (Chelyocarpus chuco) geteilt, oder es sind länglich, keilförmige, mehrmals gefaltete Segmente vorhanden. Diese können im Endbereich wiederum in einfach gefaltete Untersegmente geteilt sein.
Der Blütenstand steht zwischen den Blättern, ist hängend und ein- bis zweifach verzweigt. Die Blüten sind zwittrig und stark duftend. Die Kelchblätter sind fast bis zum Grund frei. Die Blüten besitzen meist zwei oder drei freie Fruchtblätter. Die Staubblätter haben fleischige, breite Filamente. Die Frucht entwickelt sich nur aus einem der Fruchtblätter. Sie ist kugelig, das Exokarp ist glatt oder grob korkig-warzig, das Mesokarp ist dick und trocken, das Endokarp ist häutig.
Die Chromosomenzahl beträgt 2n = 36.
Chelyocarpus kommt im Amazonas-Gebiet von Bolivien, Brasilien, Peru, Ecuador und dem Westen Kolumbiens vor. Die Vertreter wachsen im Tiefland in Gebieten mit hohem Niederschlag. Die Vorkommen decken sich mit drei der neun von Haffer 1969 postulierten Regionen, in denen der Regenwald in den trockenen Perioden des Pleistozäns überdauerte.
Die Gattung Chelyocarpus Dammer wird innerhalb der Familie Arecaceae in die Unterfamilie Coryphoideae, Tribus Cryosophileae gestellt. Die Gattung ist möglicherweise die Schwestergruppe aller übrigen Gattungen der Cryosophileae.

Simplified phylogeny of the Cryosophileae based on four nuclear genes and the matK plastid gene.[2]The name Chelyocarpus is derived from Ancient Greek and means "turtle carapace-fruited", a reference to cracked surface of the fruits of the genus, which resemble the shell of a turtle.[3] The species was first described by German botanist Carl Dammer in 1920.[1] In the first edition of Genera Palmarum (1987), Natalie Uhl and John Dransfield placed the genus Chelyocarpus in subfamily Coryphoideae, tribe Corypheae and subtribe Thrinacinae[4] Subsequent phylogenetic analysis showed that the Old World and New World members of Thrinacinae are not closely related. As a consequence, Chelyocarpus and related genera have been placed in their own tribe, Cryosophileae.[5] Chelyocarpus is considered to form the sister clade to the rest of the tribe.[6]
Three species of Chelyocarpus are native to the western Amazon, while the fourth is from western Colombia. Chelyocarpus chuco is found in Brazil and Bolivia, C. ulei in Colombia, Ecuador, Peru and Brazil, C. repens near Iquitos, Peru, and C. dianeurus is found in the Pacific lowlands of Colombia.[3]
The leaves of Chelyocarpus chuco are used for thatch and to weave hats. The woolly covering of the leaf sheaths of C. dianeurus are used to stuff pillows, and salt is extracted from the trunks of C. ulei.[3]
