B. variabilis[2] is a parasitic species. Females kill and replace the queens of B. pensylvanicus, taking over their nests in the process. The decline of the latter as hosts can partially be linked to the decline of B. variabilis.[2] This species of bee can be distinguished by the lack of pollen baskets. The bee features have a dark face with yellow hair in its vertex and with dark brown wings. Its thorax has variations between black spots or patches. For females, they only have black abdomens but males can vary in their hair color patterns.[3]

El abejorro cuco variable o Bombus variabilis es una especie de abejorro cuco, un himenóptero apócrito de la familia Apidae.[2] Es una especie nativa de América del Norte y se extiende hasta Guatemala.
Es de aspecto parecido a Bombus insularis, pero con mayor extensión de pelos negros. Es un parásito social de Bombus pensylvanicus; más al sur parasita a Bombus sonorus.

Bombus variabilis (saknar svenskt namn) är en insekt i överfamiljen bin (Apoidea) och släktet humlor (Bombus) som lever i Nordamerika.
Huvudet är svarthårigt; hjässan har dock en gul tofs, tydligast hos hanen. Mellankroppens främsta del är gul, i övrigt svart. Honans bakkropp är helt svart, hanen kan ha ett gult band mitt på bakkroppen (bakkroppssegment 3 och 4 framifrån). Längden är 17 till 19 mm för honan, 14 till 17 mm för hanen.[2]
Humlan är en snylthumla som saknar arbetare; honan tar över en annan humlearts bo, vanligen Bombus pensylvanicus, och låter arbetarna i detta föda upp sina ungar.[3] Arten flyger mellan juni och november (tidigare start i södra delen av utbredningsområdet) och besöker ett stort antal blommor, bland andra segelbuskar, sidenörter, astrar, skäror, tistlar, flockelsläktet, nävor, solrosor, flox, blågull, hallonsläktet, rudbeckior, gullris, klöver, verbenor och veronior.[2] Arten är numera mycket ovanlig.[3]
Bombus variabilis finns i USA från Illinois och Ohio västerut till North och South Dakota samt söderut till North Carolina, Florida och Mexico.[2]
Det har hävdats att följande taxa skulle vara synonymer till denna art: Bombus intrudens, Bombus guatemalensis, Bombus sololensis och Bombus mysticus[1].
