Gymnopilus aromaticus Murrill, sp. nov
Pileus convex to expanded, thin, somewhat cespitose, 3 cm. broad; surface conspicuously floccose, areolate with age, yellowish-ferruginous, margin not striate; context whitish, aromatic, with the taste of birch twigs; lamellae adnexed, crowded, rather narrow, yellow to brightferruginous; spores ferruginous, ellipsoid, 8X4/*; stipe cylindric, densely yellow-fibrillose, chrome-yellow, solid, hard, whitish within, 2-3 cm. long, 4 mm. thick.
Type collected on a dead hemlock at West Park, New York, August 9, 1903, F. S. Earle 1854 (herb. N. Y. Bot. Gard.).
Distribution: Maine and New York.
