Spheroidal and amoeboid flagellates (8-28 µm) with a single flagellum. Axostyle with a broad capitulum and a slender trunk not protruding; V-shaped parabasal. A flagellated tissue-dwelling phase in the cycle. Ultrastructural study has confirmed the trichomonad features; three basal bodies are barren. One species, H. meleagridis, causes enterohepatitis (black-head) in fowl. The infection of cecal mucosa reaches the liver. Transmitted by the eggs of the nematode Heterakis gallinae (Lund and Chute, 1973). Description by Tyzzer (1920), Wenrich (1943), Honigberg and Bennett (1971), McDougald and Reid (1978); electron microscopy by Schuster (1968), Rybicka et al. (1972). Type species: H. meleagridis.
