Description of Gigantomonas ( anglais )

fourni par BioPedia
Devescovinid flagellates (35-50 µm) with three long anterior flagella and a long and slender recurrent one, weakly adhering to the cell body along a large cresta; short, free posterior portion. No real undulating membrane; cresta developed almost all along the body with an outer edge thinner and undulating. Stout rod-like axostyle with a capitulum covering the nucleus and with a blunt or pointed end, not projecting from cell. Parabasal body near the nucleus, not coiled around the axostyle. Amoeboid forms (80-300 µm) uni- or bi-nucleated, with reduced mastigont system and paradesmoses between two dividing nuclei. Large amoeboid forms with many nuclei have been described. Reproduction both by binary and multiple fission has been reported by Cleveland (1966c). One species, G. herculea, occurring in Hodotermes mossambicus and in additional hosts such as Microhodotermes viator (Kirby, 1946; GrassÚ, 1952a, Cleveland, 1966c). No EM study. Type species: Gigantomonas herculea Dogiel, 1916.
