Spheroid or amoeboid flagellates (10-22 µm) with four free flagella and one flagellum separated from the other three. Axostyle with a broad capitulum and a slender trunk, not protruding. Parabasal apparatus with a rod-shaped body and a long parabasal fibre. No tissue-dwelling phase in the life cycle. The only species described, P. wenrichi, lives in the cecum of fowl (Lund, 1963; Honigberg and Kuldova, 1969). Ultrastructure not yet studied. Type species: Parahistomonas wenrichi Lund, 1963.
