The Escudo Hummingbird is endemic to Panama's Escudo de Veraguas Island; this island is part of the province of Bocas del Toro, and the island is situated in the Caribbean Sea approximately seventeen kilometers off of the mainland in the Golfo de los Mosquitos. The island itself was connected to the mainland as late as the early Holocene, when sea levels were lower. The Escudo Hummingbird is one of twelve avian species endemic to the country of Panama.
