Culms sharply triangular, coarse, 4-6 dm. high; roots coarse, reddish-brown; sheaths brown, membranous, rather loose, pointed at the summit; spikelets 1.5-3.5 cm. long, cylindric, acute; scales 4 mm. long, straw-colored or gray, broadly -ovate, obtuse or somewhat acute, firm, striate, the margins erose but not conspicuously membranous ; style trifid ; stamens 3; achene 2-2.4 mm. long (including the style-base), obovate, turgid, green or light brown, rough, with about 20 rows of deeply pitted quadrangular cells, the apex narrowed to a neck about one-half the width of the achene, broadening again to form the base of the triangular style ; bristles coarse, usually exceeding the achene, firmly toothed.
Type locality : Madagascar.
Distribution: Eresh to brackish water: Texas {Runyon) ; Cuba; Mexico; Guatemala; Panama ; Old and New World tropics.
