Rhizomes many-branched, forming tufts, with fibrous remains of old leaves at nodes, slender, 0.6–0.8 cm diam.; roots few, fibrous. Stems simple, solid, almost absent or to 2.5 dm. Leaves: basal longer than stem, blade light green, finely veined, narrowly linear, 3–4 dm × 0.4–0.6 cm, glaucous, margins not thickened, apex acute; cauline 1–2, spreading, sheathing for about 1/2 length, foliaceous, blade not inflated, 0.7–1 dm. Inflorescence units (1–)2-flowered; spathes nearly opposite, connivent, linear-lanceolate, 4–9.5 cm × 4–6 mm, subequal or outer longer. Flowers: perianth indigo, purple, lavender, white, cream, or yellow; floral tube linear, gradually dilating apically, 6 cm; sepals usually with fine, dark veins basally, becoming coarser on claw, oblanceolate or obovate, 3.9–7 × 2 cm, base abruptly attenuate into claw; petals oblanceolate, 3.5–6 × 0.5–1.6 cm, base gradually attenuate; ovary ovoid, ca. 1 cm; style 2–3.5 cm, crests overlapping, reflexed, semiovate, 0.8–1.8 cm, margins denticulate; stigmas triangular, margins entire; pedicel 1.5–2 cm. Capsules oblong to ovoid, somewhat 3-angled in cross section, 2.5–3 cm. Seeds dark brown, angular, finely wrinkled. 2n = 40.

Iris macrosiphon, the bowltube iris, is a flowering plant in the iris family, endemic to California in the Cascade Range Foothills, north and central Sierra Nevada Foothills, Inner North Coast Ranges, and San Francisco Bay Area, where it occurs in sunny grasslands, meadows, and open woodlands.

The leaves are very slender, 2.5–5 mm wide, and blue-green in color. The flower is variable, golden yellow to cream or pale lavender to deep blue-purple, generally with darker veins. The flower stems are usually short (less than 25 cm) when in the sun and bear 2 flowers. It blooms in spring.

Uses

Used as a source of fiber by Native Americans. The fiber was used for fish nets, deer snares and other items.

It is also cultivated as an ornamental plant, where it prefers dry summer dormancy, with good drainage.

Iris macrosiphon , comúnmente denominada iris tazón de tubo, iris de tierra y iris largo entubado ,[1]​ es una especie de planta Angiosperma de la familia del lirio, endémica de California (Estados Unidos) en las estribaciones de la cordillera de las Cascadas, en las estribaciones norte y central de la Sierra Nevada, en la cordillera interior de la costa norte y en la zona de la bahía de San Francisco, donde se encuentra en pastizales soleados, praderas y bosques abiertos.[2][3]​ Las hojas son muy delgadas, 2,5-5 mm de ancho, y de color verde azulado. La flor es variable, de amarillo dorado a crema o de lavanda pálida a azul-púrpura profundo, generalmente con venas más oscuras. Los tallos de las flores suelen ser cortos (menos de 25 cm) cuando están al sol y llevan 2 flores. Florece en primavera.[4]

Usos

Usado como fuente de fibra por los nativos americanos. La fibra se usaba para redes de pesca, trampas para ciervos y otros artículos.

También es cultivada como planta ornamental, donde prefiere un período de dormancia de verano seco, con buen drenaje.
