This species is common in the Gulf of Panama, burried in the substratum (typically sand to muddy-sand). It has been collected in Panama Bay from Tortola Island (USNM E 14302; Centroid Latitude: 8.8667, Centroid Longitude: -79.5664, depth 6 m), Culebra Beach (USNM E 26476), Farfan Beach (USNM E 28096), and Taboguilla Island (USNM E 14303, depth 8 m). Lessios (2005) reports also collecting it from Rodman at Playa Venado, and around the Pearl Islands Archipelago (from Pacheca Island; 8 40.23 N, 79 02.64 W, depth 20 m; Pedro Gonzalez Island, 8 22.70 N, 79 02.77 W, depth 7 m; Contadora Island, 8 38.685 N, 79 01.898 W, depth 30 m, and Rey Island 8 17.30 N, 78 50.32 W, depth 15.7 m), Gulf of Panama, eastern Pacific.

De wetenschappelijke naam van de soort werd in 1846 gepubliceerd door Achille Valenciennes.[1] De eerste publicatie van de naam ging slechts vergezeld van een serie afbeeldingen van het skelet. Volgens Christian Frederik Lütken was dat exemplaar afkomstig uit Peru.[2]
