Perennial, glabrous, the stems more or less closely tufted on the woody base, 3-5 dm. tall, narrowly winged, often purplish, paniculately branched above, the branches rather stiff, the cymules rather compact ; leaves alternate, spreading or ascending, the blades thinnish, oblong to linear-lanceolate, mostly 1-2.5 cm. long, acute or abruptly pointed, entire, slightly paler beneath than above; bracts similar to the leaves but smaller, not glandular-toothed ; outer sepals ovate, 3-3.5 mm. long, abruptly pointed, erose ; inner sepals broadly ovate to orbicular-ovate, slightly shorter than the outer and more abruptly pointed, erose or very finely glandular-toothed near the apex ; petals yellow ; filaments subulate ; staminodia subulate ; styles united below the middle ; capsules globose-ovoid, 2.5 mm. long, surpassing the sepals.

Perennial, pubescent, the stems often loosely tufted, about 3 dm. tall, purplish, hispidulous, fastigiately paniculate above; leaves alternate or mainly so, spreading or ascending, not crowded, the blades thickish, oblong to oblong-lanceolate, mostly 0.7-1.3 cm. long, acute, glabrous above, pubescent beneath, entire, sessile ; bracts similar to the leaves but smaller, not glandular-toothed ; outer sepals ovate, usually broadlyso, 2-2.5 mm. long, acute, entire ; inner sepals oval-orbicular or somewhat obovate, nearly as long as the outer ones, abruptly pointed and usually with a few gland-tipped cilium-like teeth near the apex ; petals yellow ; filaments subulate, glabrous ; staminodia subulate ; styles united below the middle ; capsules globose-ovoid, about 2 mm. long.
Type locality : San Miguelito Mountains, near San Luis Potosi, Mexico.
Distribution : Mexico.
