Body elongate, compressed, with large cycloid scales. Body uniformly blackish-brown in young, black dorsally, paler ventrally in adults. Distinguished by its anal fin element counts, lack of fin spine with serration on the anterior edge, and 3 to 6 large canine-like teeth on lateral side of the lower jaw.

體長橢圓形而側扁。頭大。眼大。吻短鈍。口大,斜裂,下頜稍突出,上頜末端及眼中部;上下頜前端具犬齒,側邊、腭骨、鋤骨則具絨毛狀齒。前鰓蓋骨後緣平滑,下緣具細齒;鰓蓋骨無棘。體被圓鱗,鱗大易脫落。背鰭兩個,互相分離,第一背鰭具硬棘IX,第I棘細小,第III棘最長,各棘前緣皆平滑;第二背鰭具鰭條I+9;臀鰭與第二背鰭相對,具鰭條II+7;腹鰭略小,具鰭條I+5,硬棘前緣平滑;胸鰭長而低位;尾鰭深叉形。體一致為黑褐色,腹部較淡。各鰭緣較深。

Descripció
- Pot arribar a fer 35 cm de llargària màxima (normalment, en fa 30).
- Cos allargat, comprimit, amb escates cicloides i de color marró negrós en els juvenils, mentre que els adults són negres al dors i més pàl·lids a la zona ventral.
- 10 espines i 9 radis tous a l'aleta dorsal i 2 espines i 7 radis tous a l'anal.
- 25 vèrtebres.[6][7][8]
Depredadors
Al Japó és depredat per Congriscus megastomus i Macrorhamphosodes uradoi.[9][10]
Hàbitat
És un peix marí i bentopelàgic que viu entre 100 i 800 m de fondària al talús continental[11] i entre les latituds 23°N-36°S i 19°E-154°W.[6][12]
Distribució geogràfica
Es troba des de l'Àfrica Oriental[13][14] fins a les illes Hawaii.[15][6][16][17][18][19][20][21][22][23][24][25][26][27]
Observacions
És inofensiu per als humans i es comercialitza fresc o en forma de farina de peix.[28][6]

Distribution
It can be found from Eastern Africa up to the islands of Hawaii. Most of them live at a depth of 100-800 m (330-2600 ft).[2]
Description
They have 10 dorsal spines, 9 dorsal soft rays, 2 anal spines, 7 anal soft rays, and 25 vertebrae. The body is elongated and compressed with large cycloid scales. The body is blackish-brown when young, though after maturing into adults, it becomes paler.[2]

Synagrops japonicus (Doderlein, 1884) è un pesce osseo di mare appartenente alla famiglia Acropomatidae.
Distribuzione e habitat
Ha un areale molto ampio, che copre parte dell'oceano Pacifico e l'oceano Indiano e che si estende dalle Hawaii all'Africa[1]. Proviene da Giappone, Madagascar, Riunione, Sudafrica, Mozambico, Tanzania, Somalia e Kenya[2]. Nel 1990 ne è stato pescato un esemplare nel mar Ligure[3]. È una specie tipica delle acque profonde, che arriva anche a 800 m di profondità e che non sale sopra i 100[1].
Descrizione
Presenta un corpo non particolarmente alto né allungato, con la testa dal profilo arrotondato. La lunghezza massima registrata è di 35 cm, anche se di solito non supera i 30[1]. La colorazione è scura e varia dal bruno al nero. Le pinne non sono particolarmente ampie. Gli occhi sono grandi.
Biologia
Alimentazione
Si nutre di molluschi cefalopodi, echinodermi, in particolare stelle di mare, crostacei malacostraci come Euphausia pacifica e di pesci più piccoli (Nemichthys scolopaceus, Lestidium prolixum, Lycodes caudimaculatus, Tarphops oligolepis, Stlengis misakia)[4].
Predatori
È spesso preda di Macrorhamphosodes uradoi e Congriscus megastoma[5].

Leefomgeving
De Japanse spleetvin is een zoutwatervis. In brakwater is de soort nog nooit aangetroffen. De vis prefereert een diepwaterklimaat en heeft zich verspreid over de Grote- en Indische Oceaan. De diepteverspreiding is 100 tot 800 meter onder het wateroppervlak.
Relatie tot de mens
De Japanse spleetvin is voor de visserij van aanzienlijk commercieel belang. In de hengelsport wordt er weinig op de vis gejaagd.
