Alphestes is a genus of marine ray-finned fish, groupers from the subfamily Epinephelinae in the family Serranidae, which also includes the anthias and the sea basses.[2] Alphestes species are found in the western Atlantic Ocean and the eastern Pacific Ocean.[3]

Alphestes immaculatus e Alphestes multiguttatus provengono dall'oceano Pacifico, Alphestes afer è diffuso nell'oceano Atlantico[2].
La specie di dimensioni maggiori è A. afer che raggiunge i 33 cm[2]. In tutte le tre specie la colorazione è formata da macchie marroni e di altri colori disposte irregolarmente.
