Differs from other members of the A. erythrinus complex by having the following characteristics: from all others by having a much longer second dorsal fin spine, reaching to at least the base of third ray of second dorsal fin when depressed (spine in other species do not reach third ray); from A. indicus by having 14 pectoral fin rays (versus 13, rarely 12 or 14), and by lacking pigment on the dorsal surface of the caudal peduncle (present in A. indicus); from A. marquesensis by lacking scattered chromatophores on sides of caudal peduncle that extend anteriorly as a band from caudal fin base to vertical from ends of dorsal and anal fin rays (pigment extends forward as a band in A. marquesensis); from A. susanae by having pigment present on scale edges at front of second dorsal fin and sometimes along its base and scattered chromatophores on caudal fin base (absent in A. susanae) (Ref. 40822).

體長圓而側扁。頭大。吻長。眼大。主上頜骨到達眼睛後緣,尾鰭呈叉狀。前鰓蓋的下部軟且未正常骨化。D. VII-I,9; A. II,8; P. 13; C. 3-4,9+8,3-4; Pred.S. 6-7; GR. 5,6+1+1,3; HL2.45-2.62;BD. 2.56-3.12 in SL;SnL. 3.56-4.44;ED. 3.11-3.72 in HL。本種曾被Smith(1961)視為和/A. coccineus/為同種異名, 直到最近, Mayashi and Kishimoto(1983)才根據兩者在BD./HL.,IS/SL的比例以及鰓耙數的不同,而鑑定為兩個不同的種。體呈淡紅至淡褐色,浸泡福馬林後之顏色差異則從黃棕色到暗紅色,靠背鰭部份自頭到尾鰭基底顏色較深;體被櫛鱗,不易脫落;各鰭蒼白。

Apogon erythrinus,[1] also called Hawaiian ruby cardinalfish, is a marine fish species endemic to Hawaii. It belongs to the family Apogonidae and the subfamily Apogoninae.[2]

Description

The Hawaiian ruby cardinalfish is a relatively small red fish with a somewhat transparent appearance. They can grow up to 1.57" (4 cm).[3] They have a second dorsal fin spine that reaches at least to the base of the third ray of their second dorsal fin when depressed, and they have 14 pectoral fin rays.[4] They usually get about 4 months old.[5]

Distribution and habitat

The Hawaiian ruby cardinalfish is endemic to the Hawaiian islands.[6] These fish are very shy, nocturnal, and prefer to hide in and patrol along holes and crevices.[6]
