Shortspine thornyhead (Sebastolobus alascanus)Shortspine thornyhead (Sebastolobus alascanus). This photo was taken at a depth of -409.8 meters in Sur Canyon as a part of a deep-sea coral expedition conducted by NMFS aboard the R/V Shimida in December, 2010.
In the wild these fish dwell at great depth in the oxygen minimum zone feeding largely on brittle stars. Spawned gelatinous egg masses float to the surface where larvae can be recovered and bred.
