Oceanic, found between 225-750 m during the day and between 90-375 m (juveniles) and 450-550 m (adults) at night. Epipelagic to mesopelagic (Ref. 31442). Widespread distribution in all oceans, limited by 10° and 15°C isotherms at 200 m and by a productivity greater than 50g Carbon per square meter per year. Sexually mature from about 5.9 cm. Spawn mainly during summer to autumn in the Mediterranean (Ref. 4775). Oviparous, with planktonic eggs and larvae (Ref. 31442). Also Ref. 58302.

體較短而高，側扁，後部略細。頭中等大。吻很短，鈍圓。眼大，大於吻長。口中大，上頜骨狹長而延伸至前鰓蓋後緣，末端擴大；上下頜、鋤骨、腭骨及中翼骨均具齒。體被大而薄圓鱗，易脫落；側線略彎曲。背鰭單一，位於體中部，具軟條12-14，後部另具一脂鰭；臀鰭基底長於背鰭基底，具軟條20；尾鰭叉形，尾鰭副鰭條柔軟。各部位之發光器位置於下：鼻部背位發光器(Dn)甚小，位於眼前上方；鼻部腹位發光器(Vn)甚小；鰓蓋位發光器(Op)2個，位於前鰓蓋後緣下方，Op1明顯較Op2小，均在眼眶下緣縱線之下；鰓被架位發光器(Br)3個；胸鰭上方發光器(PLO)位於胸鰭基部附近，但不超過上緣之水平線；胸鰭下方發光器(PVO)2個，二者排列呈斜線；胸部發光器(PO)5個，幾為一直線；腹部發光器(VO)4個，VO2位置略高；腹鰭上位發光器(VLO)位於腹鰭和側線之間，接近腹鰭基部；臀鰭上方發光器(SAO)3個，三者排列略呈直線狀，SAO1位於VO4的後上方，SAO3位側線下緣；體後側位發光器(Pol)無；臀鰭發光器(AO)11個，前後連續而沿臀鰭基部依次排列，通常有3個在臀鰭之後；尾鰭前位發光器(Prc)2個，相互接近。

Electrona risso is a species of myctophiform ray-finned fish in the family Myctophidae, the lanternfishes. It is known commonly as the electric lantern fish, chubby flashlight fish,[1] and Risso's lantern-fish.[2] It is a widespread species of all the oceans.[3][4]
The male reaches a maximum length of about 8.2 centimeters. It becomes sexually mature at about 5.9 centimeters.[3]
This species is epipelagic to mesopelagic, living at depths of 90 to 820 meters, swimming at shallower depths during daylight hours.[3] Its main food items are copepods.[5]
