Body rather deep, belly with 19 to 23 + 8 to 12, total 28 to 35 (usually 30 to 34) scutes. Eye large, lower jaw strongly projecting. Dorsal fin origin near midpoint of body; anal fin origin below hind part of dorsal fin base. Swim bladder with a single long tube passing back down right side of body above anal fin base. No toothed hypo-maxilla.

Apparently occurs also in rivers (Ganges - see Wongratana, 1980), but not in Vellar estuary (Ramaiyan and Whitehead, 1975); Day (1875) referred to Pellona motius (if this was indeed the present species) as riverine, 'descending as low as the coast' and gave its size as not much over 4 inches, i.e. about 10 cm standard length; this would suggest that I. megaloptera ascends and spawns in rivers (Ref. 188). Juveniles and/or adults are found in mangrove creeks, inlets, subtidal edge of mud flats, near inshore and far inshore waters (Ref. 121464). Feeds on fish, plants and benthic invertebrates (Ref. 188).

An inshore species, but apparently occurs also in rivers (Ganges at Allahabad and rivers of eastern Uttar Pradesh, but not in Velar estuary). Ascends into the upper end of the tidal zone (Ref. 12693). Feeds on fishes, crustaceans, amphipods, occasionally polychaetes, tunicates and small amounts of algae and diatoms.

Cá bẹ trắng hay còn gọi là cá trao (Danh pháp khoa học: Ilisha megaloptera) là một loài cá trong họ Pristigasteridae phân bố ở Ấn Độ - Thái Bình Dương: biển Ấn Độ, Java, Sarawak, và Macao.
Đặc điểm
Chúng có thể sống trong môi trường nước mặn, nước lợ, nước ngọt. Cá có đầu lớn vừa, dẹp 2 bên. Miệng rộng. Thân dài, dẹp lườn bụng bén, có 1 hàng gai nhọn cứng hướng về phía sau. Gốc các vi ngực có vảy nách dài và nhọn, cá không có vảy đường bên. Lưng cá có màu xám xanh và hơi đen, bụng màu trắng, ngọn vi lưng, vi đuôi màu đen.
