Sepia erostrata Sasaki, 1929

ILLUSTRATIONS.—Okutani et al., 1987:44.

DIAGNOSIS.—Mantle about twice as long as wide; fins starting slightly behind anterior edge of mantle. Arm formula I>IV>II = III; arms I and IV of male much longer than other arms, keel very prominent. Tentacular club oval to crescent-shaped, with low aboral web and about 100 suckers in 7 to 8 longitudinal rows, a few enlarged suckers in central rows. Sepion lanceolate. Anterior margin of striated zone with indentations shallow to nearly semicircular. Inner cone narrow, outer cone cup-shaped, slanting, with very distinct wings. Spine obtuse.

TYPES.—Holotype: National Science Museum, Tokyo, male, 45 mm ML.

Sepia erostrata is a species of cuttlefish native to the northwestern Pacific Ocean, specifically off western mainland Japan, from Sagami Bay to the Kii Peninsula. It inhabits subtidal, inshore habitats.[3] It is the commonest species of cuttlefish occurring in rocky shorelines around Japanese coasts.[1]

Sepia erostrata grows to a mantle length of 90 mm.[3]

The type specimen was collected off Manazuru, Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan. It is deposited at the University Museum of the University of Tokyo.[4]

Sepia erostrata is een soort in de taxonomische indeling van de inktvissen, een klasse dieren die tot de stam der weekdieren (Mollusca) behoort. De inktvis komt enkel in zout water voor en is in staat om van kleur te veranderen. Hij beweegt zich voort door water in zijn mantel te pompen en het er via de sifon weer krachtig uit te persen. De inktvis is een carnivoor en zijn voedsel bestaat voornamelijk uit vis, krabben, kreeften en weekdieren die ze met de zuignappen op hun grijparmen vangen.

De inktvis komt uit het geslacht Sepia en behoort tot de familie Sepiidae. Sepia erostrata werd in 1929 beschreven door Sasaki.[1]
