"Proneptunea rossiana n.sp. (Fig. 298)

MATERIAL EXAMINED: NZOI Stns A463, A464; Eltanin Stn 2005.

DISTRIBUTION: Known only from the Ross Sea in 369-870 m.

DESCRIPTION: Shell small, white, ovate, strongly sculptured by spiral keels. Whorls 4 ½ including a protoconch of two bulbous, but rather straight-sided whorls. Protoconch appears smooth under normal magnifications but seen to be minutely granular under higher power. Suture impressed. Penultimate whorl with a weak subsutural cord and three equally developed, strong spiral keels which have a tendency to become bifid towards close of whorl. On the last whorl an additional spiral keel is added at the level of the adapical margin of the aperture, with a further 7-9 spiral cords across the remainder of the last whorl and canal. The spiral sculpture is crossed by widely spaced, narrow axial riblets, and much finer, regular axial striae are developed in the interstices between the spiral keels. Base drawn out into a short, blunt canal. Aperture broadly ovate, produced below into a short, open canal. Outer lip thin, scalloped by the external spiral sculpture.

MEASUREMENTS: height 5.7 mm, diameter 4.0 (holotype); height 6.6 mm, diameter 4.4 mm (paratype).

HOLOTYPE: from NZOI Stn A464 in NZ Oceanographic Institute (H.549).

PARATYPES: from NZOI Stn A463 in NZ Oceanographic Institute (4, P.753) and National Museum of New Zealand (3, MF.56639), from Eltanin Stn 2005 (one, USNM 860133) in National Museum of Natural History.

REMARKS: The new species seems most closely related to P. amabilis Thiele from off Kerguelen Island, having more the appearance of the younger shell of P. amabilis figured by Thiele (1912, pl. 13, fig. 16). Proneptunea rossiana differs in having a much wider shell and more numerous spiral cords. It is considerably smaller than any of the other described forms and the specimens available may not be fully adult."
