Diagnostic Description ( espagnol ; castillan )

Árbol o arbusto de 2 a 15 m. Fuste con pocos aguijones. Ramas jóvenes rojizas, glabras, sin aguijones, escasamente lenticeladas. Hojas imparipinnadas. De 3 a 7 pares de folíolos, opuestos, de elípticos a ovados, de 2 a 10.2(-14.2) por 0.8 a 5.2(-6.8) cm., glabros y lustrosos, coriáceos. Apice corto, de acuminado a redondeado (en ocasiones levemente emarginado). Base obtusa. Borde generalmente entero. Pecíolo y peciolulos rojizos. Inflorescencia en panícula terminal, hasta de 13 cm.Flores blancas, con 5 pétalos. Frutos en folículos verrucosos, rojizos, obovoides, de 4 a 8 mm. de diámetro. Las semillas son negras, de 3 a 6 mm. Se distingue por la coloración morado rojizo del pecíolo, raquis y peciolulos. El fuste por lo general carece de aguijones o son muy escasos, principalmente en la base.

A tree with twigs, foliage, and inflorescence shortly and densely pilose ; leaves oddpinnate, about 1.5-2 dm. long; leaflets 5, coriaceous, the terminal one with a petiolule 4-5 mm. long, the ultimate pair remote from the terminal one, 5-6 cm. long, 3-4 cm. broad, oblong, obtuse, the base acute, short-petiolulate, the lowest pair oval, 2.5^1 cm. long, 2-2.5 cm. broad, the lateral nerves 7-S, prominent beneath ; panicle terminal, pyramidal, densely flowered, 7-8 cm. long, the lower lateral spikes 3^t cm. long ; pedicels 2 mm. long; pistillate flowers : calyx about 1 mm. long ; sepals 5, broadly ovate, the margin pale, ciliate ; corolla about 2.5 mm. long ; petals 5, oblong, 2.5 times as long as the calyx; disk with a short gynophore ; gynoecium 5-carpellary; style central, terminated by a disk-shaped stigma.
Type locality : Near Tlacolula, Oaxaca.
Distribution : Known only from the type locality.

Zanthoxylum melanostictum es una especie de árbol perteneciente a la familia de las rutáceas.

Descripción

Es un árbol que alcanza un tamaño de 8–20 m de alto. Las hojas alternas, trifoliadas o imparipinnadas, de 13-23 cm de largo, con 3 folíolosde 5.5-13 cm de largo y 2.3-5.5 cm de ancho, ápice obtuso, acuminado o redondeado, margen serrulado o entero. Las inflorescencias en panículas axilares o terminales y subterminales, de 4-8 cm de largo. Las semillas de 5-5.5 mm de largo.

Distribución

Se encuentra desde el sur de México a Venezuela y Perú. En Nicaragua crece en la Reserva Natural Cerro Kilambé (Jinotega) a 1200-1700 m de altitud.

Taxonomía

Zanthoxylum melanostictum fue descrita por Schltdl. & Cham. y publicado en Linnaea 5: 231–232, en el año 1830.[1]
