Stem to 45 cm, creeping, branched, proximal parts rhizomatous, distal parts erect or decumbent. Petiole 3–10 cm, essentially glabrous but pubescent near leaf blade; leaf blade orbicular or reniform-rounded, 1.5–3.5 × 2–7 cm, both surfaces glabrous or abaxially sparsely hirsute on veins, base deep-cordate, margin very shallowly 7-lobed (some leaves parted to almost middle), lobes 3-crenate. Umbel many-flowered, solitary at nodes, sometimes 2–3 fascicled at tips of branches; peduncle longer than or equaling petiole; bracts small, membranous, with purplish stains. Hydrocotyle wilfordii is close relative of Hydrocotyle ramiflora, but differs from the latter in its leaf blade glabrous on both surfaces or abaxially sparsely hirsute on veins (vs. sparsely hirsute on both surfaces), peduncles equaling or slightly longer than the petioles (vs. 1-2 times longer than the petioles).

Evolution

Phylogenetic analysis of rbcL, matK, ITS, rpoC1 introns sequence data (Plunkett et al., 1996, 1997; Downie et al., 1996, 1998; Plunkett and Lowry II, 2001) suggests that Hydrocotyle is sister to (or included within) the core Araliaceae clade. Apart from its herbaceous habit and bicarpellate gynoecium, Hydrocotyle possesses valvate and broadly inserted petals, sclerified endocarps, and a basic chromosome number of X = 12 (in at least some species; see Moore, 1971), all characters that are common in core Araliaceae. More specifically, Hydrocotyle species share many character states with several of the basally branching members of core Araliaceae such as Osmoxylon and Astrotricha. Many of these species have entire or palmately lobed leaves, bicarpellate gynoecia, petals with broad bases (and lacking the inflexed apex), and laterally compressed fruits. It is not difficult to imagine the evolution of Hydrocotyle from an ancient araliaceous ancestor through paedomorphic loss of secondary growth (Plunkett and Lowry II, 2001).
