Perennial, with a stout cespitose caudex ; stem stout, 2-3 dm. high, with erect branches, dark-colored, densely pilose ; leaves very dark-green, densely pilose on both sides, strongly veined, pinnate, with 7-9 leaflets; these obovate to obi an ceolate, coarsely •dissected about halfway to the midrib into oblong segments ; cyme narrow, many-flowered, with erect branches ; hypanthium densely pilose, about 8 mm. in diameter when fully developed; sepals and bractlets subequal, about 5 mm. long, ovate, exceeded by the cuneateobovate bright-yellow petals ; stamens about 20, short ; pistils very numerous ; style short, fusiform.
Type locality : Douglas Creek, Wyoming. Distribution : Minnesota to Wyoming and Colorado.

Stout perennial ; stems several, erect or ascending, 3-5 dm. high, pubescent with white appressed hairs ; leaves pinnate, usually with but two pairs of leaflets ; petioles of the basal leaves 4-7 cm. long, white-strigose ; leaflets obovate, 2-6 cm. long, greenish and silkystrigose above, white-tomentose beneath, cleft into broad lanceolate or oblong divisions ; stem-leaves short-petioled and often subdigitafe ; stipules large, ovate, 1.5-2 cm. long, often coarsely toothed ; inflorescence narrow, with elongate erect branches, often flattopped ; hypanthium white-villous, deep, about 6 mm. broad in fruit; bractlets 4-5 mm. long, lanceolate or oblong, acute, nearly equaling the ovate acute sepals ; petals about equaling the sepals, obovate ; stamens 20 ; pistils numerous ; styles short, thick and glandular at the base,

It is native to much of northern and western North America, including most of Canada and the western half of the United States. P. pensylvanica grows in many types of habitat. The plant is quite variable in appearance. It may be small and tuftlike or slender and erect. The leaves are divided into a few leaflets which are deeply lobed and have hairy undersides. The inflorescence is a cluster of several flowers, each with five yellow petals a few millimeters in length. The flower is 3 to 5 mm wide. P. pensylvanica grows in elevations between elevations 2700 to 3800 meters.

Descripción

Planta de tallos robustos, de 40-90 cm, erectos, grisáceos, pelosos; hojas grandes, vede oscuro, casi sin pelos por arriba y claro y muy pelosas por debajo, divididas hasta el nervio central, generando 5-11 segementso opuestos, alargados y profundamente dentados. Las flores de primavera hasta el otoño, que se abren paulitanamente, forman grupos numerosos; tienen 5 pétalos amarillos que duran poco, de unos 5 mm, de igual tamaño que los verdes sépalos del cáliz.[1]

Distribución y hábitat

Originaria de Estados Unidos y Canadá, crece también en la península ibérica. Vive en taludes, cunetas o zonas arenosas.

Taxonomía

Potentilla pensylvanica fue descrita por Carlos Linneo y publicado en Mantissa Plantarum 1: 76. 1767.[2]

Etimología

Potentílla: nombre genérico que deriva del latín postclásico potentilla, -ae de potens, -entis, potente, poderoso, que tiene poder; latín -illa, -illae, sufijo de diminutivo–. Alude a las poderosas presuntas propiedades tónicas y astringentes de esta planta.

pensylvanica: epíteto geográfico que alude a su localización en Pensilvania.
