Inhabits open beaches; off-shore islands; sheltered bays and gulfs; over soft and hard bottoms (Ref. 4983). Feeds on fish (Ref. 558).

Haplochromis gowersii is a species of cichlid endemic to Lake Victoria. This species can reach a length of 22.4 centimetres (8.8 in) SL.^[2] The specific name of this taxon honours the former Governor of Uganda William Frederick Gowers (1875-1954).^[3]
