General Description

Colonies. On modified Leonian's agar medium reaching a diam. of 9 cm in 7 days at 25°C, pale white or concolorous with substratum, thin, appressed, azonate; reverse concolorous; aerial hyphae branched, septate, 1.5-6.0 μm diam., colourless; ascocarp initials simple coils, arising as side branches from vegetative hyphae. Anamorph. Not observed. Ascomata. Perithecial, solitary or aggregated, superficial, subglobose to pyriform, 500-750 × 375-450 μm, black by reflected light, brown by transmitted light; neck conical to short cylindrical, black, glabrous, 180-210 × 150-210 μm, with apical, circular ostiole, lined with filiform, septate, colourless periphyses measuring 30-45 × 4.5-6.0 μm; peridium membranaceous, pseudoparenchymatous in surface view, brown, 54-78 μm thick, three-layered in section, outer peridial cells angular, thick-walled, brown, 9-18 × 6-12 μm,, medial peridial cells subglobose to angular, thick-walled, colourless, 12-14 × 6-12 μm, inner peridial cells flattened, thick-walled, colourless, 6-15 × 6-7 μm. Asci. Cylindrical to subcylindrical, 225-300 × 36-54 μm, rounded to slightly truncate at the apices, tapering below into a short stipe; apical ring broad, distinct, 8-spored, with spores arranged in one row or irregularly in two rows. Ascospores. Aseptate, ellipsoidal or subglobose to almost globose, rounded at both ends, (34-) 35-45 × (22-)25-32 μm, occasionally possessing irregular surface striations, colourless when young, becoming olivaceous, finally dark brown to black at maturity, with walls uniformly ornamented with numerous, tiny, circular, inwardly projecting wide shallow pits, or occasionally with medial or narrow deep pits, measuring 1.0-2.5 μm diam., containing 6-8 germ pores which may be scattered or concentrated near the ends, without gelatinous sheath or appendages. Paraphyses. Filiform-ventricose, septate, colourless, evanescent.
