Colonies. Homothallic. On glucose peptone agar, flat and granular with an umbonate centre which is pale vinaceous and downy; flat area surrounding umbonate centre powdery to granular, vinaceous brown; reverse irregularly spotted with dark red or dark vinaceous brown. Conidia. "Macroconidia" not observed. "Microconidia" septate, variable in size and shape, elongate, clavate, occasionally pyriform to subglobose, borne laterally or terminally, singly on short pedicels, or sessile on the hyphae, smooth-walled, usually non-septate, occasionally 2- or 3-septate, 4-6.5 × 2-2.5 μm. Ascomata. Globose, pale buff to pale brownish vinaceous, 450-700 μm diam., excluding appendages; peridial hyphae colourless, septate, uncinately branched with curled end; cells of the peridial hyphae dumbbell-shaped, symmetrically or asymmetrically constricted, densely asperulate, 8-12 μm long, 7-8.5 μm wide at enlarged ends; appendages of two kinds: slender, smooth spiral hyphae, borne terminally, and slender, smooth, septate, tapering hyphae extending outward, 60-96 μm long. Asci. Subglobose, thin-walled, evanescent, 4.8 × 6 μm, 8-spored. Ascospores. Colourless, smooth, oblate, 2.5-3 × 1.4-2.8 μm, yellow in mass.
