இந்த வகை தட்டான்களில் ஆண் தட்டான்கள் செம்பழுப்பு நிறத்திலும் பெண் தட்டான் பசும்பழுப்பு நிறத்திலும் காணப்படும். ஆணின் இறக்கைகள் நிறத்துடனும், பெண் இறக்கைகள் நிறமற்றும் இருக்கும். அதிகபட்சம் 2 செ.மீ. நீளமுள்ளவையாகவையும், வாலைப் போன்ற வயிற்றைக் கொண்டவையாக இருக்கும். இவை பொதுவாக தாழ்வாகப் பறக்கக் கூடிய வகையைச் சேர்ந்தவை, இவற்றில் ஆணுக்கு இறக்கையில் தேன் நிறத் திட்டுகள் தென்படுவதால் தமிழில் இதற்கு தேன் தட்டான் என்று பெயர் வைத்தார்கள் எனப்படுகிறது.[8]

It is a small dragonfly with brown-capped yellowish-green eyes. Its thorax is olivaceous-brown, marked with a reddish-brown humeral stripe and two brownish stripes on each side. Wings are transparent; but with a broad bright orange fascia extending from base to within 2 to 3 cells of reddish pterostigma. Abdomen is ochreous-red, marked with dorsal and sub-dorsal brown stripes. Anal appendages are in reddish-brown. Female is similar to the male; but in pale yellowish-green color. Wings are transparent, tinted with yellow at extreme base;, but the bright orange fascia seen in the male absent.[7]
It breeds in weedy ponds, lakes, and slowly moving streams; especially in sluggish waters. It is very common along sewage canals, tanks, ponds and ditches.[7][8][9][3][4]

黄翅蜻（学名：Brachythemis contaminata）是蜻蜓科黄翅蜻属下的一种蜻蜓。
雄性脸为橄榄色，眼睛上面褐色，下面蓝灰色。胸部橄榄棕色至红棕色，上面有两个红棕色的横向条纹。腿深褐色。翅膀透明，叶脉微红。前后翅都有明亮的橙色补丁。腹部为鲜艳的红色。[1]
雌性脸为黄白色，眼睛上面浅棕色，下面蓝灰色。胸部浅黄绿色，背部中央的有一条褐色窄条纹，另外有一条深棕色的横向条纹。 腿与雄性相似。翅膀透明，没有雄性的橙色斑点，后翅黄色。腹部浅青褐色，背部中央有一个黑色的条纹。[1]
这种蜻蜓喜欢生活在污染的水域，如排污沟渠、池塘和贮水池等。有时在污水处理池会聚集超过1000只的群。它们飞行时很贴近地面，栖息在水草上。在池塘，沼泽和贮水池育种。[1]
