Shrub or small tree, the branches reddish-brown, glabrous; stipules 2-3 mm. long, deltoid, acute or acuminate, often with marginal glands, glabrous; leaves opposite and ternate, the petioles stout, 1-4 mm. long, glabrous, the blades narrowly oblong, elliptic-oblong, linearlanceolate, or lanceolate, 4.5-12.5 cm. long, 0.8-2.3 cm. wide, acute to subcordate at the base, rounded and apiculate to long-attenuate at the apex, glabrous or sparsely pilose beneath along the veins, bright-green above, lustrous, the venation plane or the costa prominulous, paler beneath, the lateral veins slender, arcuate^ascend,ing; peduncles mostly simple, 2-4 cm. long, glabrous, the heads 6-8 mm. in diameter, the receptacle very densely setose; calyx and hypanthium 2-2.5 mm. long, densely white-sericeous with short hairs, the calyx 1 mm. long or shorter, shallowly 4-5-dentate, densely pilose within, the lobes minute, rounded, often glanduliferous; corolla 6-7 mm. long, glabrous outside, the lobes oblong or ovate, sparsely pilose within, often with black glands, in the sinuses; capsule 4-5 mm. long, densely and minutely sericeous; seeds brown, with a large white aril.
Type locality: Near Acapulco, Guerrero.
Distribution: In wet soil, Sonora to Nuevo Le6n and Guerrero, also in Honduras.

Vegetative Merkmale

Cephalanthus salicifolius ist ein laubabwerfender Strauch oder kleiner Baum, der Wuchshöhen von 2,5 bis 5,5 Metern und Durchmesser von 1,2 bis 3 Metern erreicht.[2]

Die gegenständig angeordneten Laubblätter sind in Blattstiel und Blattspreite gegliedert. Die einfache Blattspreite ist bei einer Länge von etwa 12 Zentimetern sowie einer Breite von etwa 23 Millimetern länglich.[3]

Generative Merkmale

Die Blütezeit reicht von März bis Juli. Die weißen Blüten stehen in kugelförmigen Blütenständen zusammen. Die Sammelfrucht enthält braune Nüsschen.[4]

Vorkommen

Das natürliche Verbreitungsgebiet von Cephalanthus salicifolius reicht von den Ufern des südlichsten Teils des Rio Grande Valley in den Countys Cameron und Hidalgo in Texas[5] durch den größten Teil Mexikos von Coahuila bis Oaxaca; in Honduras gibt es ein weiteres disjunktes Areal.[3] [6]

Cephalanthus salicifolius wächst auf feuchten Böden der Auenzone, in Brüchen und an den Ufern stehender Gewässer.[7]

Taxonomie

Die Erstbeschreibung Cephalanthus salicifolius erfolgte 1809 durch Friedrich Wilhelm Heinrich Alexander von Humboldt und Aimé Jacques Alexandre Bonpland in Plantae Aequinoctiales, 2.[8][9] Synonyme für Cephalanthus salicifolius Humb. & Bonpl. sind: Cephalanthus occidentalis var. salicifolius (Humb. & Bonpl.) A.Gray, Cephalanthus occidentalis subsp. salicifolius (Humb. & Bonpl.) Borhidi & Diego, Cephalanthus peroblongus Wernham.[10]

Cephalanthus salicifolius is a species of flowering plant in the family Rubiaceae.[5][6][2] Common names include Mexican buttonbush, mimbre, botoncillo, and Jazmin blanco.[7] Its native range extends from the banks of the southernmost stretch of the Rio Grande in Cameron and Hidalgo Counties of Texas[8] through much of Mexico from Coahuila to Oaxaca; a disjunct population exists in Honduras.[9][10]

Like other species in its genus, Mexican buttonbush grows in the wet soils of riparian zones, swamps, and pond margins.[11] It is a deciduous shrub or small tree, reaching a height of 8–18 ft (2.4–5.5 m) and a width of 4–10 ft (1.2–3.0 m).[7] The oblong leaves reach 12 cm (4.7 in) in length and 23 mm (0.91 in) in width.[9] The white flowers are produced from March to July; the fruit is a collection of brown nutlets.[12]
